I'm in the process of putting a factory dual quad set up off a 283 on a 327.. during the fit up a fitment issue revealed itself... it appears that the back of the heat shield is hitting the road draft baffle preventing the intake from seating.. it's about an 1/8 off.. all of the parts I'm using are original to the 327 which is a 1964 engine.
I mean theoretically this intake should bolt right on right??? Were there variations with the road draft baffles, or are they all the same(283/327)
I'm thinking that the heat shield needs to be trimmed a little, but i figured I'd check in with the peanut gallery before I start modifying anything...
I've attached a photo showing where the shield is hitting.. the red is what I plan on cutting off- 20241229_201608.jpg 20241229_201608.jpg 20241229_201608.jpg 20241229_201738.jpg 20241229_201746.jpg

can you post a picture of the can installed in the engine?

A chevy parts book printed in 1974 lists one part number for all 1955-64 engines for the can. Another Chevy book printed in 58 shows that same number for all small block V8s including Corvette, so it should be the same

That's what I thought.. thanks for the verification , and the photos.. as far as I know these really only go on one way, right?
Our photo look to be identical, no??
Also, I've been running this engine with a offhauser intake /tri power set up with no fitment issues.
I just dropped the original cast iron intake on the engine and it doesn't quite fit right.. but then again I removed the heat shield when I sand blasted it then welded it back on.. it should be in the right spot????

Earlier I slathered the top of the breather with grease, when I dropped the DQ intake on the grease transferred over to that front part of the heat shield...

  5. I had the same problem on my 283 with a Edelbrock Streetmaster intake, my fix was to massage the can carefully till there was clearance, have had no issues. JW

I’d just flatten the can before I cut the heat shield.

  7. I saw the baffle can was "squished" a bit on an old 327 I picked up, guy said it was done to fit an intake he used.

    Your can and Jim’s differ. IMG_3620.jpeg IMG_3621.jpeg
Too bad Jim’s engine is buttoned up. Both of you could have measured from China wall and compared.

See if you can tap the can in further? loosen the screw first. It might let the bracket twist a little, and the added clearance should be all you need.

just a guess, I can only look at pictures, I can't put my hands on it

I was able to knock the breather in a little bit and I also trimmed and bent the heat shield a smidge... she fit like a glove! 20250101_171321.jpg

Those are 1962/early 63 rockers covers, getting hard to find, did you have them chromed?

Years ago I bought a pair of L79 rocker covers at the Portland Swap Meet that had been in a car that suffered a battery explosion, the original 350 hp decals were still in place.
I thought they were subpar with the acid stains so sold them during a "housecleaning" session, wish I'd kept them for wall hangers.
