A young, tall, Mariette Hartley? For you young folks, she was an actress back many years ago, on the popular tv shows and movies. Hello, Wow, an oldie from way back in So Cal culture…one of the hot spots in Laguna Beach, CA. It was a popular corner to hang around as the “Sound Spectrum, a rock music store/head shop,” was the calling card for all those young teenagers involved in the changing of our 60s social culture. The famous Pottery Shack compound was just steps north of the Sound Spectrum, too. Most cities do not allow folks walking around in bathing suits in the downtown area. But this location was just steps away from the ocean and rocky shoreline beach. The building behind the girls is located in Laguna Beach at 1316 Pacific Coast Highway & Cress St. It used to be named "Hotel California". When I first moved here 47 years ago I wondered if it was connected with the Eagles, "Hotel California", but that was a state of mind, not a location. So, there is no connection. Hotel California is no longer on the front of the building as it has been bought, sold & repainted many times over. It has gone through many changes, been renamed many times over since the early 1960s, but has been a recovery center for the past several years. Jnaki Just across the busy Coast Highway, the girls are walking toward the best view (of the second reef) of the famous, Brooks Street surf break. If the girls were walking across the busy intersection today, they might be walking to the other beach side hotel called, La Casa del Camino Hotel. Recently, that hotel created a roof top dining area that has some of the best views up and down the coastline. Plus, stadium seating for the big waves of the summer/fall hurricane season. Note: The latest news about the Coast Highway scene in Laguna Beach is that just steps away is the famous Sound Spectrum record shop. Started in 1969, it has been a haven for all things music and has stood the test of time, community mores and an endless stream of customers. It is a true Laguna Beach iconic store… Now, it is for sale. Many of our old LP records came from that old store. YRMV But for local beach folks, the famous Brooks Street reef break is just steps across the street… Yikes!
