There are a couple of current threads on the BARN about NOT running LZ gears in heavier, maybe 2800lbs cars. I have a set of 25 tooth cluster sets in my original steel '32 roadster with a Columbia so my weight is about 2400lbs and they are sweet. Anyone running LZ gears in a heavier car than a coupe or roadster? I ran 25 tooth Zephers in a 32 highboy coupe, good flathead & a 4 :11 rear gear. The trans was a 50 Mercury with OD, a great combo. Worked well..
How much does a stock Zephyr weigh? I'd guess heavier than any model '32 Ford and all '40 p***enger models.
Yes the LZ weighed about 3,350 lb with either 4.11 or 4:44 and an overdrive. It had a 292CI V12 with 110HP. I think a '40 coupe with 4:11 rearend would be a good match.
I run a 25 tooth set in my 39 pickup with a 324 olds and 4.11 rear. Best thing I ever done. Dry weight on the truck is 2750 lbs add a little more for the olds and I'd say we are over 2800. It made driving around town much easier with less shifting and I still do 65 on the highway with no issues.
Thanks 62pan for confirming my thoughts. I like the LZs so that 1st gear is for more than just getting the vehicle moving.
As anyone who runs a '39 box with 25 tooth gears knows it is probably the way the car is driven more so than the weight of the vehicle. I'm another owner of a '32 Highboy Roadster with a '39 box and have been driving it gently for 18 years. Old parts have to be respected and not abused. Same goes for the Columbia rear axle. I don't expect to ever have a problem with either transmission or Columbia. Happy New Year!!!
