Since it already has the cross spring, I'd move the plate up between the tail lights and hang a polished quick change rear there the correct width to ease the rim search. Save a lot of work lowering the back and make it more interesting visually.

  2. Modern wheels have modern offsets
    Old style wheels don’t
    IMG_3980.jpeg

Can get different back spaces on some of these

anyway... been slowly working on lowering the rear....got it down 1'' probley 2'' to go still.. probley just get 8'' wheels for the rear...had to order a chrome lic plate frame ww/ a light...hopefuly that'll make the rear of the car easier on the eye... so slow progress,... still gotta cut the front shock mounts off and move them and the lights forward... got chrome shocks for it...this is one of those hotrods that you drive all you want...cross country would not be a problem..

beings the car has so much chrome and yellow, thought I would just stay with that...it's just not the same try'n to fix a build as it is to start fresh..maybe they are just being nice,,, but most all that see the car say it looks good...maybe not a real traditional build... but sometimes not being like everyone else works for me....it is what it is....

I've been packing away at this...lots of work with no visual progress.... lots of ground issues as usual.. but now every thing works with no issues...put the new exhaust, and cut off the shock and head light mounts and lowered them and moved them forward...put chrome shocks and turned the exhaust out in front of the rear tire... shes getting there...

the exhaust is magnaflo 2 1/4''... custom made hangers and out in front of the tires...had to order a chrome lic plate frame with a light from so cal... no one in vegas had one in stock.. I think it will make the rear look better when the plate is up where it goes between the tail lights...

got to go get paint matched... and think I'll put 15 x 8's on the rear... they don't make a positive offset wheel but they do have a zero... that'll bring the tires in a little more

this roadster is a treat to drive... lots of power and no rattles that and unbelievable smooth ride... the new shocks front and rear added to the road force balanced tires made a nice difference

they mounted the hood with dzus fasteners.... another "nobody in town" item....I ordered some and they came in yester day... also ordered a 40 ford steering wheel... they come black... trying to figure if I should paint it yellow or tan to match the seats.... or just leave it black... that and if I should change the interior to black...????

so comments welcome on that idea...I know everyone here hates the wheels... I love that...

again,... re do's are tough... gotta work with what cha got..

Correct, they are most commonly called '42-'48 spindles. Also, the king pins are a 1/2" longer so are not a direct interchange with the '37-'41's.

From the photos your axle could be Model A through 1936. The height of the spring perch bosses on the axle will be 2 1/4” on an A axle, and 2” on the ‘32-‘36 axles.
For me the easiest identifier for spotting a ‘37 and later axle is the shorter distance between the spring perch bosses and the king pins.

I think the car looks a lot better now. To my eye there is just too much yellow. Too much street rod 80s monochrome. I'd lose the yellow on the front steering parts and hubs. Maybe other things like the back axle. The yellow on the engine is also too "look at me" for my taste.

But in reality you have a pretty nice car that runs and drives and was built to a high standard. It is what it is. Enjoy it.

Edit: Spindles do look like 42-46 "squareback". Axle looks like a old school dropped 33-36.

    Mart.

one thing for sure... i'm going over ever square inch of this car.... look at this pic, and if you can blow the pic up and look at the spring....the whole spring stack is all to the driver side... they never put a long spring bolt through the stack.... so when I took the 4 nuts off the the spring clamp.....they are all just laying on top of each other and all pushed to one side.... like I said, I will make a car out this pile of bolts.... and one I can trust knowing that it's right... and be satisfied when I have looked and put a wrench on every fastener...and made sure it's done proper... the front axel was 3/8 farther to one side, my thought was ... how could that be???? till I saw that there was no bolt coming through the bottom spring clap....with any of these old cars...I never assume it's right... I check to make sure

Some things you can't use the "THATS GOOD ENOUGH" and this is one of them... that bolt has to be in there to center the front suspension, and keep it centered.... who the hell would think that it's not needed???? again.... I will make a safe and reliable car out of it...

I have been busy, moved the shock mount forward and the lights forward 4'' ... got some paint matched and been toughing up all the paint chips,,,,new exhaust to clean up the clutter underneath, removed the lic plate bracket..., waiting on the new one from So Cal speed.. I think it's looking better... slowly.... still alot I wanna do... the oil pan needs polished... hope I don't have to take if off....but might be nice to see what I got...motor runs good and strong,,, so I should be able to fuc that up with just a 1/2 in socket...

    IMG_4410[9510].jpg IMG_4411[9509].jpg IMG_4412[9507].jpg IMG_4413[9508].jpg

oh, and new right size shocks front and back...the wire hanging down is the power for the lic plate light...
