Anyone have any tips on painting a ‘57 Chevy? I’ve painted a few different cars and other things but nothing with fins, or this big (mostly 90’s cars shaped like a lozenge). I’ve never had to paint a shape like the inside of the fin where I’ll be spraying away from the centreline of the car. Any tips or suggestions on how to approach paining this thing? I’m using single stage satin black so I don’t have to worry about metallic laying down evenly.
Ya just pull the trigger and spray it the single stage satin is more of an issue. I ve only used it once. Had to push the wet edge across the panel. No starting in the center. did a hood. So pushed the wet edge across the hood. Friend sprayed a complete car with it. Used 2 painters. Both started in the middle of the roof and mirrored each other. The single stage satin would leave a line or not melt into itself during spraying. Meaning if you started in the middle of the roof, by the time you got back around to it, it would leave a streak down the center. It was in summer and they used the slowest hardener and reducer provided. Still flashed very fast
Thanks for the advice, It’s cool and I’ve got slow reducer but I’ll try to carry the edges just the same. I’ve used this product before and didn’t have a problem with striping but that was on a very small car. This stuff is specifically satin black and I find it works better for a satin paint job than primer or flat clear.
If it is a hardtop paint the roof before you paint the rest of the car. You can mask it off and not have to rush as much while you paint the rest of the car.
Good advice here. I’ve painted a couple 57’s and main thing I did was push the wet edge across the top panels like Anthony mentions so you don’t end up with a dry edge in the middle.
Just realize if you get a run with satin paint you can't easily fix it like gloss paint. Not sure I would be trying to paint my first curvy car with satin paint. A lot different than a square box '90's car.
Looks good, I think my wife has enough rolls of "last years and the year before" Christmas wrapping paper that I could mask off two 57 Chevys without and issue. Something about "oh well that is old, I bought new for this year".
I tried a lace pattern on the roof but that didn’t work out so we sanded it down and tried again. We wanted some contrast, white and gold were voted down. We had this single stage blue paint, can’t wait to see how she looks out in the sunshine!
