Art & Inspiration Are you a one color guy?

  1. I personally like a bit of contrast so I like two tones. Like my 53 bel air that has Saab true black on the body and Ford hot red on the roof. Going to do the 54 white with a dark blue roof. I what they call legally colorblind so the black and red scheme seems to appeal to me the most ..... though I try to avoid doing that color scheme too much so I have some diversity. One nice thing about the true black I used is it actually hides body flaws unlike normal black. I also like extremely bright colors like neon because I have no trouble seeing them.....but those colors don't exactly take to cars here regardless of if built traditional or modern street rod in my opinion.

  3. I like all colors, as evidenced by the model cars I've painted. But, I don't think I could bring myself to painting a car brown, even though I've seen brown cars that I loved. I don't think I could bring myself to that. IMG_8937.jpg IMG_8936.jpg IMG_8935.jpg

Over the years most of my cars have been some shade of blue or black, but I have dipped into the red, green hues,a few grey/silver and even a white and metallic brown. A firm no on bright yellow or orange.

  5. I have had many colors through the years. I tend to like bright metallics and run the other way from black. Too much maintenance for me.

FWIW, my general rule of thumb is: If you want all the wanna be’s and non car people to ignore your car at any type of car show, just paint your ride black. Then the only people that stop to talk or admire it will be real car guys/gals looking at build details and such, not the Ooo isn’t this pretty crowd.

Good example, some of the only guys that came up to look at my 5W nine years back at the DD poker run staging grounds were the two car guys that rolled up behind me. Notice how far back they parked so no shit fell off my car unto theirs. :p

Must admit, I went and admired their ride as well. Damn it was something. :D

[IMG] Did you know that the most popular colors today are silver and gray. But is this due to availability, personal taste, or resale opportunities? It is not necessarily resale, since the colors which hold the value of a vehicle better are currently yellow followed by beige, then orange, then green, and then gray, followed by red, then blue, then silver. White, black, purple, brown, and gold are at the end of the list.

To me, solid, bold, vibrant colors look great on purpose built cars such as WZ JUNK posted up in post #32, but just take a look at the subtle contrasting,, complimentary colors of the background skyline and horizon. I would like to replicate a similar effect on a car.

  11. Used cars come in whatever color they are. If i have any say in it, old cars tell me what they want to be. Except my vette , the body man told me what color it was going to be:p
