I was going to say I’ve never been in any rush with this one but since you bring it up you’re the reason I got set back a pretty serious amount of time.

Following you back from the roc in the T and 46 I turned to my wife and said “that 4 banger ain’t gonna cut it”

and the first domino fell lol

Too bad you didn't ask me, I'd have told you to leave the 4 banger.

Mikes willys with the same motor does 65+ just fine.

lol could have saved you a lot of work.

Doing 65 ain't it. It's getting to 65. If my Chevy 4 doesn't make that part fun there is a 283 under the bench that will bolt into the same hole. :)

Agreed. My choices for my Model A were the banger, a 4.3, or a 283. The 283 will get out of it's own way, look period, and sound like a V8. The 4.3 would fit better but just isn't hot rod enough for me. 283 it is!

Went and sat staring at the car with an angle finder last night and started messing with some cardboard. IMG_7662.jpeg my chevy fan won’t fit into the Stude water pump because as you can see here the pilot hole in the center is just a tiny bit over an inch wide where the Chevy is around .6 and change. The bolt circle is about an 1/8 off but so many fans come with slotted holes that’s not really much of an issue. IMG_7663.jpeg so I decided to make a cardboard “fan” after staring at the engine vs radiator angles and had had enough “theorizing” IMG_7664.jpeg 14” test fit in my good pump IMG_7665.jpeg random but anyone know why this pump has the wire clip on one side and a little window to the shaft on the other side? IMG_7666.jpeg I don’t think the one on the engine has either. Oh well moving forward IMG_7667.jpeg IMG_7668.jpeg the first thing I noticed was that 14” does actually clear top to bottom. The second thing I noticed is while it is touching the radiator on the drivers side another the bottom 4 inches it’s not really touching on the passenger side so I think the grill and rad aren’t sitting Totaly square to the frame/ engine. So more space may appear!

I also figured out that using a 14” fan every 2 deg I change the tail shaft angle is a 1/4” of front to back space at the top and bottom of the fan. That’s a world of difference.
    IMG_7651.jpeg
setting about finding a fan that is mostly positioning the blades to the back I couldn’t find a 14” fan but did find this ugly 13” one that only extends a 1/4” from the flange face. Which puts is basically flush with the pilot nub on the water pump. I need to see if that puts the blades into the bottom pulley or something but I bet it’s ok with that small of diameter

the only real issue is the center/pilot hole is so small. From a quick search if Stude sights a few guys machine down the pilot on the water pump but most guys just drill the hole in the fan bigger.

don’t love how tight that can get the pilot hole to the 4 slotted bolt holes but with apparently zero after market fans that just fit you don’t have many options for mechanical.

the closest I can find is a a 15 ish diameter four blade fan for a 216 chevy but I havnt been able to find how far it puts the blades forward online and as of yet havnt found one to put my hands on and measure. The center pilot hole is either correct within hand filing and the 4 bolt holes are also a slight massage away from correct. The biggest issue with them would be cutting the tips off which we already talked about. IMG_7653.jpeg I think k it’s likely going to want more clearance than I’m gonna come up with but it’s something I’m going to look into. The metal flex fan would get painted black and it’s so crammed in there I doubt any e would ever even notice it. But I know it’s there, you all know how that stuff goes.

if I dont find someone online with a tape and a fan I should be able to find one next weekend to measure.

current plan, square grill, possibly bump tail shaft up 2 deg, 13-14” mechanical fan.

waiting to hear back from a few Stude guys to see what they are running on there’s.

    keep ya posted

Don't know why the hole but there are a couple of different pumps. One is heavy duty for the extra belt tension on the supercharged models. I think it may also be a little longer, not sure. .The cardboard fan looks good. If you pull the front paper layer off the corrugations will move more air. :)

  11. I’ve gotten waaaaay behind lately. All caught up now though. Looking good and it looks like you got a lot of the big pieces headed the right direction. It’s like that shuffling number game…the one with the one open square and you gotta move everything around to get the #7 up into place without messing up 1-6? Good shuffling!!! This is gonna be awesome!

@Six Ball ill have to measure these before I swap them then!

  14. Measure the bolt pattern for the fan. I may have one. I have a couple smaller fans I picked up that didn't end up working for me that might work for you. For example one from a postal Jeep and one from an international harvester 674 tractor. If I have one that works it's yours

Got a lazer level for Christmas. So I got it set up and started pointing it at things of course lol. IMG_7724.jpeg Didn’t expect it to light up the headlights! I’ve so far come up with roughly a million things I could use this for. Hope you all had/ are having a good holiday season.

Old photo but shows the rake better. Might actually be lower in the front now with the v8 swapped in. IMG_7752.jpeg

Yup turns just fine and I have a set of the cast fender irons to replace the later stamped ones. Should gain me a little fender clearance. I’ve actually seen the fender irons cut just short of the tire to get even more room. I was thinking about dropping it another 3/4 inch but I think this is probably where it’s going to stay.

If mine ever gets done the 2 miles of dirt road will justify a set of rear tires like that, at least part of the year. It won't get to be very low though. Your A's stance is perfect. Wheels & stance if that is not right nothing else you do can fix it.

Although they are period correct, after I put them on there I couldn’t believe the amount of photos of hot rods in the 40’s and 50’s I found with these knobby bastards on the back , they are just mock ups. It’ll get new rubber front and back in the same size in a normal tread pattern and these will move to the next mock up chassis

I spent a lot of time in the Mother Lode area in CA (gold rush country) It snows there so every fall my friends put snow tires one their rods & customs. Most only had one car so they drove it. Also cool to see all the old Jeeps come out when hunting season started.

I’ve figured out the lowest part of my old cars by seeing the marks in snow more than once lol

Well we got a foot of snow yesterday! If there wasn’t a big drift over the door those tires would have had a test! I know @flatout51 runs them on his daily. Bet he had fun with that! Lol
