Really looking forward to watching your chop, betting it will look great.

The body needs to be solid and straight before you chop the top. Make sure there are no sagging parts because of a weak floor or door jamb. Make sure the doors close perfectly. Once the top is removed from a sketchy body, you have a huge opportunity for all the chunks to go wonky and make it ten times harder to get back into alignment.

Yes, I understand that Jeff. I can get it all solid making sure all the panels fit good, etc. with bracing. I’m just concerned that I may never get started if I don’t make it cool first.

Do you eat your dessert before your vegetables?

I think it was Dave Simard, who knows a few things about building hot rods and customs, that said “you have to restore an old car before you modify it “. I trust that mantra.

I have a friend who's a body man & wanted to widen the rear guards on his A Tudor, the ones on the car were too good to cut up so he fixed another pair that were worthy of a chop. Once he finished fixing them he said 'now these are too good to chop up!' haha

Have never really cared for chopped 40 coupes, sedans, or p.u. That said, I do believe the Merc looks better with mild chop

I may disappoint you then Dan. I plan on more than a mild chop. From what I have been looking at, I want 5” out of the A pillar.

This is still my goal for the most part including the driving part.

Oh, and I should have a dropped axle for it soon. I need to get it sitting right.

  13. There was a REALLY cool 70's era HOT ROD '40 Merc that was at the Stray Kat 500 this year. I tried to sell Jeff on that concept, but he wasn't having it. Unfortunately, I failed to take pics, but I believe it was from out of the Wichita, KS vacinity.

Here you go Bret @bchrismer and Larry @winduptoy This is the car Bret is talking about. Neat car but not the same as a custom Merc. :D

  17. Yeah, but it's cool all on it's own. If it were mine, I'd have to reverse the eye on that rear spring, but other than that, I'd drive the crap out of it and still be able to wear a cowboy hat while driving it!

Amazing... In my eyes 40 Mercs are one of the goofiest looking car of its era.
Put a chop on it & it's one the best looking Kustom options of it's era.
    Look forward to following along.

If it still has a stock rearend/suspension, 39/40 mercs have a revited in 2" spacer between the rear crossmember and spring you can remove.

To me that roofline is a choice between a Bowler hat
and a Flat cap. While wearing a Bowler can be pulled off by some, I vote Flat cap. IMG_5030.jpeg IMG_5031.jpeg
