That’s a horrible situation and those fierce winds are compounding things for the fire fighters. What can one say other than praying for a safe outcome for all.
That should read...fires...as in more than one ! At least five going on right now. Well, one's in Riverside, a few miles to the East. Mike
feel for you guys, nothing you can do. Spent lot of time in SoCal and I understand the hills, brush, and winds. Saw a dozer on the net clearing a freeway of cars, just pushing 'em out of the way for folks to evacuate.....late models, expensive.
Mother Nature can be a real bitch with some of the stuff she throws at us. I'd much rather deal with the heavy snow we had here (12+ inches on Sunday) than fires for sure. Prayers for all you folks out there dealing with them, I can't imagine how scary it is being close to the fires and not knowing which way the winds will blow them. postscript: the only good thing about the snow we had here was that I was able to get a premium price on a snowmobile I sold yesterday. We rarely get enough snow around here to use them, so I struck while the iron was hot.
Moments ago on TV, I can’t imagine the distress people are feeling. First responders will be overworked, God bless all in SoCal.
Fire is 5 1/2 miles away per Carina’s house at the moment (Eaton Canyon). Several friends up there but doing ok. Car cover blew off, fought to remove canopy cover last night when winds kicked up after sunset. Crazy because earlier the wind was just a heavy breeze. Spoke too soon. 1 friend lost his home and 55 Chevy. Sounds like he saved his 65 El Camino.
Wow ! a 32 under the threat of mother nature as submitted by fordors, certainly to close for comfort ! Seems all across the country & beyond we're threatened by the ravages of floods, tornado's, fires etc. all of which can leave in its wake a twisted, smoldering & otherwise mass of metal. Licking my wounds & angered at the totaled settlement on my 32 rear end collision I'm finding It's time to review insurance choices, coverage & to keep abreast of improvements & additions as we up grade, while my own fault by choice of insurers that fell short of damages I can at the least exercise the option to rebuild....not an option for some ravages of nature. May God help all those less fortunate in every respect. Ron
A local TV station showed a totally burned 1936 Ford parked on the side of a residential road in front of houses, in Altadena. The camera guy barely showed the front view, and they walked past it but had turned the camera across the road. A later view from quite far down the road showed the back, and it might have been a coupe. No idea why it wasn't driven away and saved, because it must have been a drivable car being it was parked out front. We're not supposed to talk about material possessions with fatal fire storms, but maybe somebody here knows about the 36.
Well 4 aircraft from a B.C. company are down there helping out. Bigger than helicopters so able to fly in high wind situations.
When the winds are up, the devil can arrive at your doorstep in an instant. Sometimes it truly is a case of life or death. We get bad fires here in Australia too, being that we are the second driest continent on the planet (after antarctica). Our thoughts are with those facing this devastating time.
I can’t really like any of the posts here. I feel so bad for those poor bastards on the west coast. My prayers go out to them.
@F&J Last big one I was close to, people took the biggest, newest people & stuff hauler out, leaving other stuff behind. They will leave them out on the street hoping they survive it away from the house.
Visited a friend several years ago living in Ramona Ca. where the scars of several past fires were still visible years later, several ranch land areas had a sort of memorial of burned-out vehicles, cars, trucks,4-wheelers, motorcycles & every conceivable type of transportation remained as mute testimony to a past devastating event.
Just can't imagine what it must be like in those canyons. Like a venturi effect when those winds hit and then just multiply. Imagine when the notice comes out to leave, they mean pronto and forget cars, etc.
how did this even start ? just crazy at how this spread and they were trying to get it under control before the line up of destroyed houses it ll rough for the people without insurance and insurance personal that have to submit claims
my buddies house was in the fire a couple years back in Boulder Creek ca, by Big Basin state park in the redwoods, hi did not evacuate and spent the night with the garden hose putting out embers, his neighbors house burned to the ground. fire sucks
Well despite the claims of a well known former civil servant about to be rehired saying that his country doesn’t need anything my country has to offer I bet there be an even greater need for B.C. softwood lumber!
I know the area. Pacific Palisades has some very steep areas. One main road up from Sunset. Temescal Canyon Road, is a 45 degree angle. There were horse farms up at the top. I saw one news clip... parts of Malibu were burned down to the PCH and ocean front.
lA satellite image shows the Eaton wildfire has set nearly every building in western Altadena on fire
We live in the interior of BC which is prone to wild fires and from I’ve heard from contractors is that any new builds must be installing steel roofs or fire proof along with fire proof siding (Hardie board). I think you may even get a bit of a break on your home insurance. Sad, it’s a beautiful around that area, we have friends in Simi Valley.
I used to live on by Santa anita dr in Altadena before I moved east. I was there for the last big fire started by a homeless person trying to keep warm. It was snowing ash at our house. My thoughts are with everyone suffering out in California
