Last picture of my blue sedan “ Ol Girl “ dressed flathead before I traded towards my 39 all ford coupe ,
I responded on page 1 but I had the engine and tranny out for some tranny service so I gave the flathead a fresh paint job and detail and the tranny got some attention as well. It's "dressed" for success. Pics follow
And were not talking basement production, low grade porn. No sir! Flatheads are the "fine art" of adult entertainment. Not for years. I'll have the engine and trans back in the car and running by next week. I'll do a running video and post it.
Here's a couple pics of one I am dressing up for my brother. Got to work on it to get it up to Bandit Billy's standards!!
Why isn't it winner, winner, prime rib dinner? I'm not a big chicken fan. I've only put around 2500 on the car but in my defense I built other cars in the meantime. I seem to spend more time building then driving.
The reason I ask about distance driving with a flathead is I bought a 47 mercury that was parked in 61 . The engine is complete . I’d like to build it to where if the Wife and I decide to go visit family in TX or LA we can just hop in the car and go 75-80 mph without issues. We have a 57 Fairlane with the y-block . We drive it every chance we can .
They are just like any internal combustion engine, if they are built correctly they will do everything you ask of it. I have driven mine in 114 degree heat with no overheating, I have driven in excess of 85 MPH on the freeway with no trouble and I have done my share of spirited street driving and tire smoking. If it had hood sides you would never know what it was running for an engine, just a good view of my tail lights. Go for it @Okie Pete! The planet needs more flathead ford powered cars and trucks.
How about one that is waiting on me to figure out a traditional direction to take it? Maybe with an additional carb?
Before you get too far into it, make sure the block is sound (no cracks) and get all of the junk out of the block that is usually left over after the manufacturing process. This last may take some concerted effort.
The heads are a bit of a mystery, at least to me. The have "MADE IN USA" cast in them along with "FOR A" so I don't think they are Canadian. I've been told they are factory style aftermarket heads and that several companies made them back in the day, but I don't know for sure.
Here is mine. Nothing special really but I polished the Stromberg carbs and added a few bits of shiny stuff. I have since swapped out the chrome alt for a Powermaster polished gen that looks much better. I keep saying that someday I will polish the intake manifold.
