Let's visit the way back mach-ine for those of you who have been around for a while. You may remember Steve Grimes who created (with the help of others like Dave Gale) a whole series of crazy roadsters. I don't know if he is still around or not, but he was great to talk to. His roadsters created quite a stir back in the day 15-20 years ago or so. I saw one posted on "the book" today so I looked up some pictures. Come to find out they are all for sale this year at Barrett Jackson, and from the auction numbers they are early in the sale so they may end up going cheap if you are so inclined to be a buyer. https://bid.barrett-jackson.com/auc...vCbM-MejaHxlnKhHCg_aem_BFmaWVVt6jcLRtLXByaDkQ
I try not to 'go down the hill' to the vast spread of PHX metro. With the speed shop closing, I had considered it. I haven't wanted to be a part of the circus, but it would be cool to see these in person. 20 bucks general admission, I might just do it.
Here are a couple of threads/links with more info on some of his cars. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/pictures-of-steve-grimes-23-t.281544/ https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/dave-gale-has-passed-away.214907/page-2 https://www.hotrod.com/news/1204sr-the-grimes-collection/
Like I posted over on the other thread, I'd like to have 3 of them. The red one first choice, the grey one second choice, the purple one third choice. I won't be buying any of them though, be cool if Speedway bought them all and kept the cars together.
Definitely works of art! Enjoyed looking at all their fantastic details at the “Nationals”, back in that time frame…”the good old days”!
So, what’s the status…were they or will they be auctioned off? So many freaking cars at that auction, it’s hard to keep track of things.
It is financial suicide in my opinion to no reserve traditional hot rods or customs when most everyone there are muscle car and pro touring buyers. I would imagine that the seller of these cars is sick to his stomach
Those prices are so damn cheap! Okay they are art, not driveable, even in a fairground setting. But that's nuts!
I seem to remeber that lil purple job driving around at an NSRA event years ago...But it was a long time ago. I may be losing my mind (what's left of it anyways).
These are really "art" cars and succeed very well on that level. They aren't going to be practical to drive if they are even street legal. You are going to have to be very young, small, and limber to even get into one, which dramatically limits the market to display purposes. I sold my track T 35 years ago because I no longer comfortably fit, and that had more room than any of these. But oh those looks!
Damn, I would have bought the red one, (my favorite) for that amount. My take on the cars. I've not seen them in person, but to me they are fairgrounds cars. They all ran and drove, with the grey one appearing to be the most drivable. I would drive the red one to my local cruise night, about 8 miles away, that's about all I think you could stand from the looks of the pedals.
