Hi all. Excited to join this forum. I figure several of you all own and use the original Beverly Shear. I recently acquired a very used Beverly B2 shear. Did a quick restoration. The knives have been sharpened so many times they have lost their relief cuts. Due to the repeated sharpening over the years, they no longer fit the Mitler Bros sharping jigs. (Current company that does sharpening and sells the Beverly Shear new) I've had a few of these Beverlys so I know them well, but I don't have another one to reference. I'm probably due for new knives eventually but I figure it's best to try to use what I have. Can anyone measure theirs or tell me the following: 1. The proper angle to sharpen the knives to? 2. If the upper and lower sharpening angle is the same? (***uming so) 3. The distance of the relief angle on the lower blade? 4. The distance of the relief angle on the upper blade? 5. The angle of the relief? Thank you!
I can't find it in my notes, but it is a standard angle...like 5 or 8 degrees. Not a half or quarter degree. It will need to be sharpened with a surface grinder in a Sine vise or similar, so just find the angle on the existing ones and copy it (***uming it's correct). Clearance is nothing critical, it's just so the jaws dont crash into the metal as you try to twist and turn. Eyeballing off of the pictures should get you close. Best bet is to buy a new set from Mittler Bros and use them as a reference on how to sharpen the old ones. Then your old ones become your oh **** I did something stupid backup set while you get your "new" jaws resharpened by the pros.
Thanks Ryno! Yeah I had a few people measure and came up with 10-15 degrees. Good suggestions. May end up ordering a set. Thanks
I ended up grinding in the reliefs and sharpening them today. Cuts great now. Thanks all who replied.
