Looking for tips on front axle choice. The coupe I'm building will be high boy, I shoot for 4 degree frame stance with 7.50-16 out back, 5.50 or 5.00 x 16 up front. P&J ladder bar with a 40 buggy spring w reversed eyes. Stock grill. I am hoping to keep the stock front crossmember as I am using a stock rad recored and I understand there's lower hose attachment issues if I drop or change out the xmember. So is 4" enough, is 5" drop better? Stock hood and hemi space issues negate a stock drop/spring behind choice.
34’s that are too low are begging to get the most expensive part smushed by a high spot in the road. A lot can be done with a spring. I’d suggest a 4” dropped axle and then make fine adjustments with the spring.
I agree, don't go too low... This car has a little spring work and drop shackles in the rear. 650-18 out back and 475-17 up front. Its amazing what a little rubber rake and some spring work will do to you. Honestly, I would do a 4" as Alchemy mentioned and fine tune with spring work. This is the easiest and cleanest way to get things where they need to be. One of the biggest things to hurdle in these cars is the rear, and in sedans you contend with rear seat and axle housing room banging floor.
Thanks man. Don't want to hijack the OP thread. I have a thread here you can check out. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1934-tudor-build.1297579/
What’s the overall vibe gonna be? So far it sounds similar to your 32 5W build? The tire sizes you’ve quoted sound more like excelsiors or auburn deluxes, than firestones. Both great choices IMHO. All that said, I’ve never built a 33/34, but with that style grille I’d be nervous about putting that nose too close to the ground. So the 4” drop would be my starting point. My buddy with his 33 5W used a 4” drop and it looks ‘right’ to me. Believe his front tires are ~25” diameter as well.
