Question. 1933 Ford three window. It has hair pin s on the front. Owner wants to go to split wish bones. Any reason that you can’t do this and use the same mounts that the hair pins use. Also use the same type rod end. My first thoughts were no you can’t. After looking at it more I can’t give a good reason you can’t. Car has a dropped beam axle. The rod ends are bushings with a thru bolt. Mount is below the frame and very well built.
It’s all about the length. Usually split wishbones are sexy long legs. Would be a shame to have to cut them off to fit into the space of a short fat leg.
You could also run into steering linkage problems, depending on what it has now, the steering linkage may come in contact with the wishbones. Where, as with hairpins the linkage may go between them.
Taking away some of the ‘torsion’ ability of the hairpins and using solid ‘bones’ will hamper ability of axle to tilt. Ibeam axle will flex some, but…. I’m sure you’ll get some of the “I’ve been running them on my car” comments, but just imagine what happens when you have max angle on your axle. Sorry for my poor artistic talent, but hopefully pic helps visualize what I’m trying to describe.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear. USE A TIE-ROD END. If it were me doing it, I’d invest the time and $ to use some of Cory’s tie rod ends. They look sweet!
