That's not what he did. It was an agreed value-the premium was paid and the company made good. It wasn't to pay the estimate for repair so what the owner did after that was not the business of the insurer. I lost a silo and had a lot of barn damage this summer. The insurance company sent me a payout far in excess of what was needed to fix the barn but not rebuild the silo. When I contacted the adjuster, I was told my insurance was for the replacement cost of the damaged structures and whether or not I actually replaced them was up to me. This was the second adjuster. The first, 500 miles away, asked over the phone what a silo was. The second on came on site.

You're not breaking the law by buying your totaled car back, and fixing it yourself instead of paying a shop. The savings you get doesn't cover all your labor, so it's not cheating the insurance company.
Anyone (including the owner) can buy a totaled hotrod and rebuild it. Almost all insurance companies will offer a totaled car to the owner before sending it off to salvage if the owner asks to buy it back.

In Alberta, Hagerty is ALWAYS more expensive than the other specialty insurance for our old junk, and in my experience their coverage is usually worse. Their insurance in Canada is not what it is in the states.

The cost to repair doesn't drop, but the value of the insured vehicle and the amount they're willing to spend to repair it do drop considerably as it ages.

Yeah there's nothing illegal in what he mentioned. The company paid out, he got the car back and fixed it for less than it was worth by saving on the labour. Nothing untoward at all.

  6. I had agreed value with Hagerty for 15 years, never made a claim, and for some reason my premium went up every year for the last 5 or 6 years – and I didn't increase the agreed value of my car. Needless to say, I don't use Hagerty any longer.

  7. Thought I would update as I just got off the phone with Hagerty. Less than 3 minutes on hold, got a guy who was an American, so he spoke/ understood English. Added the 1st on Agreed Value instantly, the 2nd one since it is newer & not normally something they insure he requested pictures. This is the 1st time I have ever had to send them pictures, but I have no problem doing that as I understand that on paper this is an everyday vehicle. Once I send the requested pictures, I am sure they will insure it for Agreed value as well.

Bill, with all of your driving, have you ever had a claim with Hagerty?

  9. Hi Jeff,

I have been blessed NOT to have ever had a claim with Hagerty. However my transport trucks are not insured with them. I have not filed a claim with the company that insures them since about 1984 when my 77 Cutlass was stolen from a Holiday Inn parking lot!:p Took my beautiful black custom striped car with Cragars there for a surprise Birthday party for a now deceased friend at the Holiday Inn Bar, came out & it was GONE! I was heartbroken back then, but now I look back & laugh! Had to drive my Racecar to work for 3 days until I bought a daily driver. My God how things have changed.

    God Bless
