The reality is I plan to do this conversion sometime in the future but I’m in no rush to do it. My 3 speed column shift mostly works ok but I’d like more top speed. car goes to the interior shop here in a week or so and I won’t have it back for at least 3 months.

    I’m running a mild flathead. 40 block, 3 3/16 pistons, 4” crank, max 1 cam, dual 97’s.

The T5 transmissions are a bag of worms. They have a wide variance in the ratios. Some good and some bad. A friend put one in his car and found the fifth gear ratio was .5. You had to be hauling to use fifth.
    As a personal opinion, I really don’t like them. I much prefer a 4-speed.

I like the 4 spd overdrive from Ford rangers, but getting hard to find. I forget the model, someone here will tell.

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. For the cost of a set of gears and an install kit he could've moved all his other gears lower and still had a nice pleasant cruising RPM.

You mean the M5OD which is a 5spd transmission? I have one in my Ranger (3.73s and 29.x" tire). It's great for what it is but it wasn't a transmission that was built for what I do. It's got a normal .8 OD and 3.9ish (depending on which one you get) first and reverse is obnoxiously tall. It's nothing special in the ratio department. If anything it could stand to have a much, much deeper first and reverse and a slightly deeper second.

That said, I like it a lot better in my Aeorstar that has 3.73s and 25ish inch tires so maybe I'd like it more in the Ranger if I geared down to 4.56s or so.

One issue though, with a low rear ratio, is first gear usable, or just a synchro shift to 2nd?

Even if first is too low for ideal off the line performance it will still come in very handy for creeping in traffic or if you wind up road tripping and want to tow something.
