We have a bunch of critters (see pictures) that would love to eat anything they can on our vehicles. My understanding is that if the wiring contains "soy products" the critters might want to eat it. I have ordered all of my wiring harness etc. from Ron Francis Wiring and I have been very impressed with their product, which I understand is soy free. With that said, they are not in the business of selling wire per se, so I am looking for a source to augment the wiring harness etc. Thanks !
When did they start putting soy into wire? I have been whipping wires for over 50 years and never heard of this.
You might check into marine grade wire like that made by Pacer https://www.pacergroup.net/wire-and...MIjcuPybWDiwMVICmtBh1h5BJcEAAYAiAAEgLwBvD_BwE Or Anchor Marine.
We have rabbits at work that chew up the wire harnesses , they sure like Dodge Minivan wires, and it doesn't help that there is nice little cubby hole to set in while chewing.
Mice and rats will chew through anything to get what they're after. Rubber Coolant hoses, silicone vacuum lines, wiring insulation, nothing is safe from them. The best defense is to not let your stuff sit around dormant for too long, get cats, or set poison/traps. A subsonic .22 also works. I picked up 2 dozen various gauge/color rolls of ETFE Insulated wire from Raychem several years ago. It's good stuff, not sure if mice like it or not.
Looks like a Possum. Caught a couple over the summer. Twas a bitch to get them out of the have a heart!
The insulation on auto wiring may be derived from soybeans but does not taste like soy. The chemicals derived from soybeans are modified and turned into other chemicals before being formed into wire coverings. Rodents , or in this case, marsupials, may chew on wires for a variety of reasons but not because of taste. https://www.torquenews.com/1083/car-talk-helps-bust-myth-soy-why-rodents-are-eating-your-car-s-wires You need better pest control.
Had one chew out the back of the glove box on our Toyota , then proceeded to chew the seat belts . Failed our safety check till we replaced the belt. Now I rigorously put poison bait station outside all the sheds , and a silent electrical deterrent device inside. It seems to work well.
Squirrels got our daily driver Caddillac & our neighbors car several years back. Chewed through the harness & a big chunk out of the fuse block. We've since moved to a rural area. My neighbor & friend here, uses under hood strobe lights that are supposed to deter critters. He hasn't had any problems & his cars sit outside & stay parked most of the time. Might be something to research for your vehicles.
Brings a new definition to "soy-boy"... . Don't want that critter gone, just not in cars/trucks/buildings/etc. Fkn mouskies, well... To quote: "I hates meeces to pieces..." . . Although Granny would've welcomed that critter. " We're having possum innards n greens. If you make it back tomorrow, we're having left-overs. That's the great thing about possum innards, they's just as good the second day... " . . Marcus...
You sure got some strange critters there- soy eating rats and possums, wire-eating mice, - We just stick to Sulphur crested cockies eating anything vinyl- motorbike seats and handgrips are a delicacy!
Thanks guys, I will look into the suggestions and let you know if I come up with a good source. I did relocate the opossum to a nice wooded area. They eat ticks and several other things that we do not need! The only damage to the Mustang in the picture is the insulation on the back of the engine bay. Nothing has been eating the wiring, so my buddies in Ford Electrical have been doing a good job ! The wiring I am looking for is for a 51 F1 project.
I just read yesterday that the critters hate the smell of peppermint oil. It’s also good for your hair when you inevitably bump your head on components treated with it…
