Does anybody sell a front disc brake kit that can be used with fatman's dropped uprights? I contacted fatman and they told me to contact Master Power Brakes. I emailed MPB and was informed their technician that made that kit is no longer there, so they can not supply the kit. Thanks for the help.
Maybe Extreme kustoms have them? They are specialized to 49-51' Merc and Ford suspension stuff.I bought a chrome-moly tie rod kit from them for my shoebox a while ago.
bolts right on. have one at the shop with the Fatman uprights, and dropped steering arms with this kit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1949-1951-4...Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d0101425&vxp=mtr
slddnmatt, This kit works with the fatman uprights....I emailed them and never got a response. But I'll take your word for it. Thanks again for the help.
i forget how much, think its like 1/4" per side if i remember.. its the thickness of the inner bearing adapter..
Yepp i have them. 95% of the time they will bolt onto a Fatman upwright and if you have a set of my older 2.5" upwright's they will bolt on but not the older Jamco's but will work with there new ones as they are made by fatmans. Will increase track width 3/8" total or 3/16" per side. I have the kit in stock for $460.00 plus shipping 5.5 x 5 bp 10.75" rotor will fit with most 15" steel wheels Gb & Thank's, The Erickson's / Extreme Kustoms 951 678-3520
Don't want to hijack this thread, but I have this setup on my 50 Mercury (was installed when I bought the car) and I have no idea what it is. Bolt pattern is different than original wheel (5 x 4 1/2 vs. 5 x 5 1/2). Any ideas?
Do you have that same kit for 49-51' Fords? I need a disc brake kit that will work with Fatman's drop uprights..
Yea we have them $450.00 plus shipping. On older Fatman uprights you will have to rotate the caliper by redrilling the mounting plate. The Erickson's / Extreme Kustoms 951 678-3520
Those are old MPB that required the spindle to be machined The Erickson's / Extreme Kustoms 951 678-3520
I'm also interested in disc brakes up front for my 1950 Mercury. Here is a picture of my current front set-up. My car is dropped in the front, not sure how (cut springs?). I am assuming I have stock A-arms and spindle. Can anyone please verify? If so, is all that I would need is the disc brake set up that EXK sells? I realize I would still need the updated master cylinder because I'm still running the original, but I'm not sure about the spindle. I would like to keep my current stance, so I just want to make sure I understand what I would need to change out. Thanks!!
Yes our disc brake kit will bolt on and comes with everything you should need. Your merc has stock A-arms, uprights & spindles. Your springs appear to be cut and i am guessing about 2 full coils and your lower A-arm looks like they are angled slightly up and that will useally result in poor handling and some bump steer. If you are not happy how your merc handle and you want some suggestions on how to improve it let me know. Rick Erickson / Extreme Kustoms 951 678-3520
Thank you all for this great information (11yrs later). I have a stock drum brake system and suspension on my 1950 Mercury Coupe. Looking to upgrade to discs. I appreciate all this information on the thread. Thank you kindly.
Good morning everyone. I realize this thread is from decades ago however I have noticed there is relevant information here as to the route I’m trying to accomplish with a disc conversion kit on my 1950 Mercury and I’m hoping someone has been down this route with a POL kit or similar frame mount dual MC conversion for there Mercury. I currently have a POL kit and wondering where this bracket is supposed to go. I’m doing a frame dual MC install and would like to stay in the area of the OG MC. I prefer to not use the firewall after considering for sometime. Can anyone shed some light as to where this bracket goes? I can’t seem to mock it up in the area of the OG spot and looking for some assistance on where I may be missing something. At the moment I have attempted to contact POL and have not received a response as of yet. Thank you kindly in advance for any assistance you may have. Stay safe, blessed, and be well. https://www.performanceonline.com/1949-51-Mercury-MERC-Car-Complete-Disc-Brake-Conversion-Kit/
My '49 has a dual master cylinder kit on the frame, although I don't believe it's the POL kit, or else it's an older version (put on before I got the car). Here's a couple pics of it mounted, might give you an idea of where yours is supposed to go. I'll be swapping to the POL discs this spring with a proportioning valve (its -4 here as I type this and my garage isn't heated). Keep me posted how your disc swap goes, I've done them on many other non-Merc cars and it's been straight forward.
@2devilles Thank you kindly. Yes, your photos have already given me some insight on possibly where it needs to be lined up to work. Wow, that’s chilly…we are sitting at about 67, still cold so probably wouldn’t survive where you are at . I appreciate you getting out there to grab this pics. Thank you very much and I’ll surely keep you posted as I move through things. Stay safe out there.
The bracket that you show= mounts between the frame, and catches the X. Also, the 4 holes are for a booster if desired.......Drilling to mount is required...... I just made my own from a post long ago, that used the factory holes for the MC. I have one of the first POL kits.......Pushing 20 years now. Stock uprights, and factory steering. Still solid to this day..........
Awesome @INVISIBLEKID. I appreciate it. Funny you say that…just mocked it up and welp I have an issue…dual exhaust, so I’ll be looking at reworking this driver side exhaust pipe. After @2devilles replied, I went back out underneath to see what’s going on here and it seems appropriate here (pic attached). Thanks again for the pics, grateful for the information and assurance on a solid brake kit. Stay safe and blessed.
Cool! Duals here also...... The factory had a hole in the X for the single pipe, which you are well aware of! Mine= Just blew a hole in the opposing side that matches, and you're good to go. Good luck with things, and if you need any tips, shoot me a PM.
