Featured Hot Rods POS Scammer alert selling my goodies a 1932 cab that’s not theirs on Facebook marketplace

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by continentaljohn, Jan 19, 2025 at 4:37 PM.

  1. I went and joined that FB group to warn the people about the fake post.
The group doesn't ask you to agree to any rules before posting.its open (1rst red flag)
I found the "Administrator" and his profile is basically non existent (2nd red flag)
I looked through the group and it's basically mostly sale post that look that have been stolen from other sites.(3rd red flag)

I've been buying and selling in fb groups and seen how this scammers evolve.
1st they reply to any post looking for a part saying they have it.
People read through their BS and we started calling them out,of course they scammed a bunch of people before that.

Next, they would reply to a wanted ad, saying that this guy or this fake company would have the part and they would tag the fake company or fake profile..
People fell for that too til people started to call them out.

Now this aholes create FB groups and lure people into thinking its a real decent group of people and that's how they operate..
Sadly it's only up to the buyer to ask the right questions, actually talk to the person on the phone and finally make the purchase in person...until then, the scammers are going to keep doing it and learning new ways to scam people.

Don't buy anything if they insist with Friends and Family period.
Unless it is your family and know where they live.
If they want Friends and Family only - it's a bullshit scam and report them.

Always pay the extra through PayPal. - at least they will investigate if there's bogus shit going on and you "might" get your money back.

If you are interested in buying an item on FB marketplace, and it's out of town, get the seller to send a pic of said goods, with a recently dated newspaper or maybe an account in their name with a recent date. If it's straight up, they will be able to do it, if it's a scammer, you won't hear from them again.

This the guys profile and the pictures on there are fake too. The pictures are from Tim Wilson's Facebook account so this guy is a total fraud. I reported all of it and Facebook won't do anything.

That was good of you...I was thinking the profile was also a hijack...I can't understand why they don't follow up and lock these crooks up. If they reply to a buyer why can't the law be the buyer...

The law and the government have no control over the internet. And even less as the days go by. It’s a crapshoot, so watch out for yourself.

I guess they have to investigate reports and that can take time...I find it extremely difficult to get a Human to talk to at these sites.

^100% this. You have zero protection if you send money via PayPal the F&F way, and scammers are fully aware of this fact.

Just to be clear, buyers pay nothing extra when using PayPal. The seller pays a 3% (or so, don't quote me on that exact number) as a service fee for using PayPal to accept payments. That fee is waived when you send money via F&F PayPal, so, yet another reason sellers want you to send money that way. DON'T DO IT.

To the O.P., you should have changed/updated your images by now. Sucks, but scammers existed before the internet, and they will exist long after the internet is gone.

To those suggesting something specific be added to the image to prevent it from be used by a scammer, magic eraser camera phone tech is way ahead of you, and scammers are well aware of it, too.

  11. When I find a scammer I will play along, and tell them I have paid, but using normal Paypal , not F&F. If you have been scammed by using a normal Paypal payment method, Paypal will investigate, but not if it's F&F. The scamming turds then go nuts trying to get you to reverse the (non-existent) payment to a F&F payment, sometimes with dozens of messages. I don't know if they are smart enough to figure out that they have been stooged, but I have had them block me on several occasions!

If Continental Jon still has the real deal available which I believe he does, its not him that has to erase the pics...FB should take down the fake bs and if they don't he really doesn't have to worry as he has nothing to do with it and it's been reported twice already by Hambers.

I struggle to see that the 3% charge is what drives them to try and get you to pay using "family & friends".
Surely it has more to do with having to declare sales to the IRS. It is tax avoidance, surely???

All PayPal income is (as of 2025) reported to the IRS if you meet the $2500 threshold...in 2026 it will be a $600 threshold:

2025 -- More than $2,500 USD in gross sales from goods or services in the calendar year.

    https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/article/will-paypal-report-my-sales-to-the-irs-help543

For legitimate sellers, I think it's just a case of some (not all) sellers trying to maximize every cent. For me, paying the extra 3% is worth the extra security for both buyer and seller, and I consider it the cost of doing business.

No, he doesn't have to delete them, but if I saw my images being re-used for nefarious reasons, I would change them to different/new images, and would suggest others do the same. YMMV.

They want the traffic. Quantity over quality.
Their real money is in selling advertising and data collection.
Unfortunately for them, bots and scammers don't buy from advertisers.
And data on bot traffic can't be of much value.
Google: "Enshittifiction", and "Dead Internet Theory".

Didn't find one with that exact avatar.
But did find one, with a very similar looking guy.
New account, very few friends, car pics.
    Sounds like the same guy.
    Blocked him.

I figure if John changes the pics the scammers will just use his new ones and the text IF they choose to. It was everything word for word. I don't think his ads were anywhere but the Hamb albeit I could be wrong. the other thing is if someone messages John to see the Cab he has it and can arrange a visit where these Scammers run you around with deliver money requests

I believe the reporting got rid of the ads...whether they do anything that's another story.

So does this apply to personal/friends&family transactions as well?
If so, there you go, the 3% does make a difference for some.

I may as well continue to derail John’s thread;)
But I usually just buy off here, and a few other places. I ask if they will take a Postal MO.
No, not because I think the Feds will step in, but because when I swing by the P.O, and pick up a MO, stamped envelope, it’s less expensive that why I get charged paying F&F via PayPal.
I usually go to town on a Saturday, the P.O. isn’t out of my way.
I’m probably too trusting, but I buy from sites where I can see how long the seller has been a member.
If I were to buy anything on FB MP, it would be a local transaction, same goes when I used to look through CL.
Okay, back to discussing PayPal issues, etc.

I hope John’s original message isn’t lost in the process ;)

  27. This is very sad to hear and much has me think ! It saddens me deeply to hear us all deal with people that want to buy and sell our cars an parts . What the future holds is up to us . Calling one in person before and asking for a references might be a start when buying of selling are stuff . Just a thought ?

  28. Anything posted on the interweb including
images and video becomes public domain
no matter what you do to make it proprietary.
Copyright and trademark mean nothing because an average person cannot afford to bring a civil case and litigate it the the world court.
I have had my YouTube videos and images
and videos I have posted on FB pirated for
many years - posting on the interweb has
    advantages and disadvantages.

Almost always images that are pirated are used to sell goods below market value - if the images
were originally posted by a real seller the price
of the goods were not what they are listed for
by the pirate - so the loss is not to reputation
of the original seller but to the wallets by folks expecting something too good to be true.
