You make a valid point. What I suggested is not for everyone. However if when I went to check out the rotted out 85 and the engine started up and ran good and did not smoke, I would still only clean it up put gaskets and timing chain in it and take my chances on going wherever I wanted to go in it for alot less than the cost of a rebuilt or new engine. This is not my first rodeo! I have done this exact scenario many times through out my life. As for going to the machine shop or buying from blueprint for a street engine. The new Blueprint engine makes the most sense and is the best option hands down! It will come with a 3 year 50K warranty. Almost no machine shop will offer that because they can not afford to. Plus all blueprint engines are test run and come with the dyno sheet. This is unless you just absolutely want the vintage engine. The machine shop will cost just as much if not more to rebuild his engine using his parts. If he buys the blueprint he can recover some of his cost by selling off his core engine. Machine shops building street SBC's these days are pretty much some kid who inherited his Dads tools and is barely getting by on what he makes building engine to engine and has been doing it so long that he doesn't know anything else and just has not realized that he would be better off financially to just shut the doors, sell off the tools to a home hobby builder and go get a union job working for the county. And as for the bigger Machine shops, Well the problem with them is they are swamped with work building Roundy round race engines so if you are going to go to them, Set aside about a year of your time being wasted while they have your engine sitting in their shop and the whole time they been telling you a 3-4 week turn around. Again None of this is my first rodeo
