Congratulations on moving forward from the “project” stage. I Love how you “fixed” the wonky deck lid (fill it Full of Louvers)!! Sounds like you’re having Fun with Dad’s Deuce, Enjoy.

Not a big fan of channeled cars but in this case looks great, taillights & license tag I'm unsure of, but since they were already in place might see how it plays out, don't mind me do your own thing & be everyone's envy!

Several things you can check on the overheating? starter issue. Like Stuart in Mn. said above you could try a heat shield, you could have your starter rebuilt or buy a heavy duty starter, if your battery is in the trunk your battery cables may be to thin & you may need to upgrade to heavier duty battery cables. Also, check your compression in each cylinder. Just some thoughts. Great car by the way.

  6. Sounds like fuel percolation with heat soak. Basically the hot motor causes fuel to evaporate out of carb bowls. Modern fuel is not designed for open top carbs but rather a sealed FI system so you will have issues at each hot stop. Fuel vapor is heavier than air and sinks to bottom of intake where it pools up. You are thus both flooded and having empty carbs making starting difficult. Easiest fix is adding an electric fuel pump to fill carbs, then crank car without touching gas pedal to clear the flooding condition while still cranking slowly depress pedal to the floor and bam it should start. Can also add a phenolic carb separator to slow down the heat sink but I have not bothered with that.

I go for the battery cables too small , grounds most be large and complete the circuit also. I kinda have a soft spot for da 3w .

Do not use the Frame for a ground. Run heavy cables directly to the starter and Engine Block.

  10. As a guy that lives on an island, and travels by ferry everytime I leave or return (often in a hotrod), I feel your pain of being the no-start center of attention holding up a boat full of commuters/travellers!

Very cool car, good luck in solving the 22 minute heat soak issue.

Quick and easy check for the starter I was told to do years ago. If it won't start have a bottle of water and pour it over the starter. If it starts, it's the starter.

HMMMMMMM....don't really agree with this . Short (and big enough) ground wire from battery-to-frame has always worked on my (M-word) .
Body-to-frame...starter to frame...engine to frame...EACH light-to-body (that's grounded to frame to negative pole on battery).

  15. Ken.....what ever you do, don't throw that starter away. The early Pontiac V/8s used a shorter starter on the manual trans engines and the automatic trans starters are too long. Most of those old Ponchos used an automatic trans so a "stick" starter is hard to find . Hope you get your "bugs" worked out ok.
