If this year goes just a little better than last there might be new life in my stillborn HAMB dragster project. I got as far as collecting a front, rear, engine and trans plus a bunch of other bits. I hate to even bring this up in case I can't make it happen again but....... I got all hot and bothered again when I laid eyes on the actual car I'd like to emulate at Garlit's museum this past weekend. Sitting there was the awsome little dragster campained by the Bean Bandits. Don't you know I came away with no pics. The car had an 84" wheelbase had conventional frontend with a torsion bar mounted rear. A Flatty powered it, had full bodywork and as I understand it the car did extremely well. Well I'm gonna try here first, if not I'm going back with a camera. What'cha say anyone have any pics. Here's one I could find.
maybe you can get some pics on this site http://members.aol.com/beanracers/ i remember watching them at the orange county airport in the 50's bob m
Rod and Custom Magazine did a write up on them a few years ago, and had quite a few pics of them. Ill check latter today and see if I can find my old issue and get a date for you.
Notice a couple unique chassis features on the Bean bandit car. The front end is conventional in that it uses the factory spring in front configuration. The rear end is located by split radius/wishbone rods and suspended by these spindley little rods which are connected to torsion springs. Neat clean light and simple.
I talked with three original members at the CHRR, they told me the club was folding. They said lack of interest from young people, could't find new blood. What a shame!..........OLDBEET
That sucks! I'm 45 y/o and most of my high school buddies are into muscle cars like the ones we lusted for as puppys. It's a shame but one day all this stuff we're into will become museum fodder if we can't get young people interested.
.......that would be a very cool HA/GR .........if you can find this issue of Hot Rod from Feb. 1953 it has all the info on the "Bean Bandit" dragster. Also sad to hear about the club coming to an end.........hopefully this won't happen!!
I thought I had more from the Hot Rod Reunion '96 or '97, but this is the only one I've found, so far. Mutt
The elder Mr. Arnett was in a bad way in a hospital last summer, he seemed like the ram rod. If he passes, the rest may just give up. they were a fun group to watch at a race.
