Changing to new intake manifold and carburetor on 1966 SBC 283. It has the original pcv system it came with(attached pictures) with the baffle in the valley and pcv valve attached to the carburetor. Plan on installing breather in valve cover because loosing front filler tube vent on old manifold. Would I be best to go this route or is there a better way?

  2. What intake are you going to? Many modern intakes can easily be made to accept the filler tube. I have a filler tube in an Edelbrock performer intake

Just make sure your new intake manifold seats all the way, some have had interference with the valley canister.
If you Google "the HAMB pvc threads" you are likely to find a couple dozen threads on exactly what you are doing.

Thanks seen that in some researching I did. I suppose if it does Ill plug the back draft hole and go with valve cover pcv

  6. Yeah that one might be harder to drill. Mine actually had an angled blank spot where a tube would go. So it was easy to drill

Where do I find a replacement filler tube? Mine has been shortened and I would like to go back to full length.

Could be tough to get an accurate bore in the intake, I do know that some years back some of the reproduction fill tubes were known to not fit snug in the GM intakes.

  10. Mine wasn't too bad to do. Biggest headache of it was remembering to keep drill speed down lol

  11. And are you wanting a chrome one or factory one? I might be able to get the one out of my original 57 intake

My Performer RPM has the pad for an oil fill tube so I put one in it for my 327. I started the hole with a 1 1/4" hole saw. It cut enough oversize that I could finish it to a nice press fit with an adjustable reamer. I also have a Performer EPS/with fill tube, #2703 I think. It's on another 327 that I don't have a home for, yet.

If the intake doesn't have a hole for a filler tube you can do it either way. just keep the system you have and run one breather cap an one "filler cap" or run two breather caps. Or a breather/filler cap and a plug in the off side valve cover and the system that is already on it. Don't frigging overthink it. Air in through the breather, air, fumes, pressure and condensaton out through the pcv into the intake and the engine is happy.

Yeah, I probably should have said the average backyard builder wouldn't have access to tooling like an adjustable reamer.

Keep that factory PCV system, and make sure you use that PCV valve or one the screws into the carb.
Keep the front Vent tube [or get a replacement] that is the character of old pre-67 Chevy's

Install the vent tube with Loctite green retaining compound and it is there for good

Why replace the manifold? If you must ,get one with the front filler tube

283's are a nice streetable engine with a Rochester 2g [keep it 2 barrel]

I'm just a backyard builder. I bought a mostly complete reamer set for cheap so I could ream my own kingpins.

There are many used manifolds for sale that have the front fill... kind of a shame to have a bitchin 283 and end up dressing it to look like a run of the mill 350....

Edelbrock C4B or C3B C3BX work well with 283 and have filler tube in both directions depending on which one you get.
They are for sale here and ebay usually about 100 to 150$.
They work just as good as a performer.
