EDIT: there's already a similar thread on weird ass cars! https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/automotive-weirdness.944738/

Every now and then I come across a car that makes me go "WHAT?" and simultaneously fills me with awe - like, how did they do this?

The most recent example of this is the 1935 Hoffman X-8. Built in secret, largely by one guy, Rod Hoffman, who may or may not have been building a prototype for someone involved in a major auto manufacturer, the car features a totally handmade X-configured motor - the consensus seems to be that Hoffman designed and built the motor himself

Whatever the purpose of the car was supposed to be never panned out, so Hoffman held on to it until the '60s, ultimately giving it to a friend, auto designer Brooks Stevens who kept it in a private museum until he died.

Somehow this thing survives in pretty much immaculate running/driving condition - just one repaint, but otherwise as it was in 1935. And how was it? It was fuckin' WEIRD. Rear-X8-engine, sloopy aerodynamic body and suicide doors! And then the interior just looks pretty much like a high end car of the era. IMG_2008.jpeg
Everything about this car blows me away - the backstory, the body design, the jaw-dropping engineering/fabrication... truly one of the craziest, most inspiring cars I've ever seen. (in pictures. MAN, I would love to see this thing in person some day.) It's for sale if you have a spare $1M.

So, thought I'd post a thread for bizarre but awesome unique builds. Whatta you got?

If you're ever in Nashville, the Lane Motor Museum has several oddball one offs. Jeff Lane is totally into that.

Absolutely love Dan Webb's interpretation of the 1926 Panhard Razor...
Should be debuting at GNRS; not good at links but ALL OVER his Instagram. The wild inner tube steering wheel has to be seen to believed! 8b3655f0d57f279d00455349389c9ef1.jpg

Not HAMB approved, but Luigi Colani's designs were bizarre AND beautiful.
