My 54’ Mercury has been for sale for over six months and best offer I got was $3,800 and a gold coin. Anyway I have really never had a newer daily driver due to the fact it would always sit at an airport parking lot. So my airport truck a 96’ ford ranger has been hijacked by my 17 year old son. Last week I accepted a shitty offer for the car. The offer fell apart at the seams I told the buyer to bring a shovel with him because for what he offered was going to motivate me to go dig it out of the snow. Well he assumed the car was frozen and locked up due to the subzero temps. I think it might be his intention to wait til the weather turned to have some kind of another reason to modify his low ball offer. I needed to get my fat ass to the gym and everyone in the family with a car were either at work or school. I walked across the frozen snow in the yard out to the street and opened up the door to the Ole Merc we call it. Few pumps on the gas pedal and vrrrrrrooom she cranked right up. I got the heat going and shoveled out a path in front of the car and went inside to have a coffee. :20 later I climbed in that thing and went to the gym with a small frozen glacier still on the hood. Funny in cold weather how the temperature inside the car can vary from 85 degrees at your feet but maybe 45 degrees at your waist. The smell from the heat of the motor, slow to fast windshield wipers in between shifts and the creeks from the cold springs compressing as I wind thru the country to the next town. Maybe I’ll keep it!
Used to be that everyone drove cars like that every day, in all weather, and got where they were headed. I guess we forget that old cars still do what they were designed to do. It's just us that's gotten lazy and spoiled.
I've had zero interest in a number of things listed. I feel you on wanting to just keep a decent runner. If it's not costing much to keep, it's not going down in value.

Giving in to a lo-ball offer is a sure-fire regret some time in the future Don't ask how I know. BTW great year for Merc.
On the other hand, if you have it for sale for 6 months and have zero interest, that might tell you that the car isn't worth what you think it's worth. I recently bought a car that was for sale for that long, no one had even looked at the car. I looked at it, and made a low ball offer, and the guy accepted my offer, and was glad to finally get rid of it. Difference is that the car I bought was no where near driveable. That will scare off almost everyone, if it's not a desirable model. Maybe the ole Merc wants to become your daily driver again? It'll be a bitch having do deal with driving an old car every day, but hey, used to be that everyone did.

Where have you listed it for sale? That looks like a really nice old Merc. $3,800 looks like a really cheap price for a car like that. You can just get in and drive it. I know if it was mine that I would regret selling it for that price at some point. For what you have been offered, I would use it as a daily driver.

If $3,800.oo is the asking price and you have nothing else to drive, you may want to rethink letting it go. It does everything you need, just not new. I doubt you could buy another Ranger Truck that's worth having for $4K. Buy a heated seat insert and slide it under the Blanket upholstery job and continue to keep using up what you already own. I agree, That looks like a really nice old Merc.

heh...I've done well recently with a few old cars on FBM. Big price, but reasonable for what the car is, sold quickly. Then again, they were cars that are a bit more trendy than a 54 merc sedan.
Presentation or lack of it and attitude have killed more car sales than one can count. I haven't seen the add for that car so I have no idea of what is in the photos or how it is written up but I have seen all too many adds lately that are turn offs simply because the car is sitting in weeds and a junk pile or is dirty or cluttered with stuff that should have been removed before photos were taken. Years ago I pulled into a guys yard with my first born with me when he was about 12 to buy a car and had cash green money in my pocket and the guy who owned the car holered that he didn't want kids in his yard or garage. We got back in the truck and left and that car was still for sale months later. Had one mouth off that he woldn't sell his car to a hot rodder when I pulled in his yard to buy the car he had advertised and yes I had full intent to stick a newer V8 and automatic in his non runner car. I like that Model of Merc but have never owned one. They just don't show up for sale in any condition around here very often.
The deadbeat obviously didn't deserve to put his (your quote) fat ass on the front seat of a cool car.
Here in the Midwest, I find that the time to sell an old car is from the last week of March (if there's no snow) until about the end of May/beginning of June. That's when people are primed to buy. Trying to sell an old car in fall/winter is like trying to sell a snowmobile in spring or a boat in January. Timing is critical. Also, as stated, presentation and wording/attitude of the listing really help, although we haven't seen your ad so no way to tell whether it's good or not.
Maybe 5 grand is too much? If so than what’s fair? $500? Been on hamb for months. I recently put sold on it after this cat shook on $5K
No evidence I’ve had either the Mercury or the Model a for sale at all on the HAMB. So whoever has the keys to this venue can answer them questions.
How about somewhere in between? When I want to sell a car, I start a little high, but then I keep lowering the price until someone buys it. Usually I get enough, sometimes I lose my shirt, but at least the car is gone and I can spend the money on what I'm currently playing with. Also, stale ads that haven't been updated for months, hopefully with a price drop, look to me like the seller really doesn't want to sell the car. Maybe you don't really want to sell the car? Nothing wrong with that, except that you're wasting everyone's time by pretending that you want to sell it, when you're not willing to do what it takes to actually sell it.
Boy, that pic takes me back to 1966 and a 53 hardtop I had....paid a whopping $40 for it and drove it a long time. So today, $3800 and a gold coin ? which coin? A Krugerrand in today's market can run $2800 and a $10 gold piece is easily $1500. Plenty of other 'coins' in the mix as well. Maybe not a bad offer from 'that' guy.

Most of the vehicle for sale ads 'round here the car/truck is filthy, covered in mud, 20 years worth of McDonald fast food trash in the interior. Its unbelievable.....Frickin' hillbilly slobs around here..... I dont think some people even know how to wash a vehicle and probably never have their whole life. and they think they can get barret jackson prices for their POS car or truck ........
Looks like a great daily driver to me too. But, honestly, also seems like a reasonable price to sell. Just a limited market for the 52-54 Mercury’s it seems. I often see them and wonder why they don’t bring more.

Yeah, I recently saw an ad for a car the seller wanted $4,500.00 for, and he was too lazy to clean the 200 pounds of maple leaves off of it before the photo shoot. Probably had to get back inside and watch "Dancing With the Stars".
