Look what followed me home today

  1. Sometimes things just work out. Having good friends helps to. Back in the day when I drove this car it had Formula One Super Stock tires on the front. I couldn't afford the rears. I have been looking very hard for some time for a set. I found some almost nos rears two years ago. The fronts have been difficult. That is until Squirrel sent me a picture of some tires his son had. They came with a car he bought. The car was featured in hot rod in the 70s. It's a 66 Chevelle like mine. The tires were new for the photo shoot then quickly taken off for other rims and tires. They are almost nos and the correct size.
Now to show everyone what kind of guy he is Squirrel and his son gave them to me for free. I'm at a loss for words.
The tires were the second to last part I needed. The very last part I need is a Eelco cool can. 20221004_141130.jpg

  4. Yes. They came in several colors. I think I have seen this one on ebay. It might have a hole in it if it's the one I'm thinking of.

Wow. haven't seen Formula One Super Stock tires in 40 years or longer. Are they still safe to drive on?

Good for you Brian, perseverance is king on these hunts and you're right, friends do help.
I've stumbled onto my share of neat stuff, usually cost me big money at the time but nowadays would be double.
A longtime friend and swap meet partner would say of me "you could reach into a bucket of shit and pull out a handful of gold", I would always reply "ya gotta keep reach'n"!
Shame we can't show our post 65 cars on the HAMB.

  8. It sure is. The beginning of big time aftermarket performance parts were just getting started. The 65 to 70 Era had some cool stuff available. I study speed shop catalogs and magazines to see what was available.

I have one of those cool cans. Here is my tire story. I drove 8 hours one way about 5 years ago to buy 2 NOS Bonneville super wide 60 L60-15 tires for the back of my off topic 66 Chevelle. the guy I got them from had them stored inside a black plastic bag in a cool basement since they were new in the 70's. I bought them and they were as soft as any new tire so I put them on the back of my car. I was as happy as if I had good sense. I had them on for about a year until one day when I was under it working on the exhaust and saw 1/4" wide cracks between the treads 3-4 inches long, lots of them. Just a few days before I had been whistling down the freeway at 75 mph.... I took those tires off and quickly ordered some repop Goodyear Polyglas Gt's for it and they are amazing tires. As much as I love old shit, I would SERIOUSLY consider not using 40 year old tires.....

You are probably right Mark, hate to say it.
I'm kind of in the same boat with my new/old Firestone dirt tires, besides being nearly forty years old they are true two ply racing tires, but damn, they sure are photogenic.
Brian will be on the lookout I'm sure for deterioration.
I really cringe when someone looks at ALL my new/old tires and tell me that if they are over ten years old they are dangerous, on the other hand I jump at the chance to tell them they are full of shit.

  11. Most likely I will have two sets of rims and tires. One set for show. One set for go.

  12. The search is finally over. Rare as hens teeth. It's going on the car not the wall. Nos 20240914_134541.jpg 20240914_134557.jpg

  13. Finding the boot got me exited to work on the car again. It hasn't fired since running on the test stand two years ago. I rigged up fuel and ignition. Fired right up. Held 65 lbs of oil pressure hot. It was cool to here it run again. I really wanted to hear how it sounded with the mickey Thompson headers. I didn't have them when it ran on the test stand. It's ready to get the fiberglass fenders fit. Acid dipping the body is next.

  16. Starting at the beginning 1984. I bought the car Feb 9th on a below zero night. I found it in a auto buyer. I still have the issue. We drove out to see the car in my dad's four door chevette. It was so cold it was hard to move the four speed shifter. It was a agonizing week long wait to get the car. My dad co signed the loan. Pic is from prom 1984 going to pic up my date. We got married in 1989. Screenshot_20220909-160658_Photos.jpg

I know you are busy with the AA/FA but thought I'd give a nudge to your Chevelle thread.

  18. I just went through the entire thread again. Hope you keep adding updates!

I did fire it up late in the fall. I have some minor work to do on the floor that I replaced. I want to fit the fiberglass fenders that I bought. I acquired a rarer than hens teeth nos ram rod shifter boot. The only thing left to buy is a eelco cool can. Most of my free time has been spent on a customers 67 gto. That money pays for the race car. Hopefully this spring I can hit the 66 hard for a week or two. I still have the auto buyer Magazine where I found my car. My dad and I rode out to Oconomowok on a below zero night in a four door chevette to look at it. I put money down on it. I had to get a loan. My dad co signed for it. The next week was the longest in my life waiting for the day that I got it. I carried the magazine around showing all of my friends. It was a great time to be alive. I was 18 graduating soon. I had a job and no worries. I was soon to have a cool car. It couldn't get much better.

Cool that you kept the ad and down payment receipt! I think I have some similar stuff from when we got the Chevelle I now have in 91.

  21. Playing catch up with the thread. This old magazine cover shows the kind of scoop i want. The velocity stacks will poke through the hood. The plexiglass glass will be blue. The stacks will be visible. With the scoop i can drive in the rain if I get caught in some. 20230212_181146.jpg

The spot welds were drilled out. The new floor was bolted down with new rubber discs. The body was lowered into place. It was clamped down. We're a spot weld was drilled a self tapping sheet metal screw was placed. When it was all screwed back in place one at a time a screw was removed and welded. It's a very time consuming process. It ends up looking factory.

  27. The next big thing to do is acid dipping the body. We have a place locally that can dip and e coat. I'm going to have to save up for this step. I don't ever want rust coming back. I don't want to do all this work over. One and done. We will see how expensive the race season is this year. That will determine things. In the short term there's alot I can do without spending money on the car. I have alot of parts I have collected over the years. Things that need fitting or modifications.

Parking cars inside, seems to do a lot of good for keeping them from rotting again!
