From that site, there is a picture album. under that are comments. This is the top one. "Thanks. Lots of details that don't really show unfortunately. It is a level 3 skill kit. It took me a day to build the compressor, a day to build the gas pumps with fluorescent light tubes & spot lights for the building front, a day to make all the oil cans and glue the decals on them, and a day to build and paint the oil drum with the dual pump and hoses. So I could use the phrase "more than meets the eye." It looks like it's a decent backdrop, but lots of details you can go crazy with.
Here's a good look at the contents: https://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/aca/kit_aca_15122.shtml And some comments on the kit itself: https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/87832-124-joes-power-plus-service-station/ BTW, you should sign up at the MCM forum, too.
I finally dug out most of my models that I bought in the 70's to the early 80's in my attic. I hadn't worked on any for over 40 years. They're in various stages of assembly and lots damaged from storage. Most models would be HAMB friendly. I have a variety of Monogram antique classics as well as some Hubley metal kits that aren't pictured. The Monograms are Duesenbergs, Packards, a Cadillac, Continental and Cord. They suffered the most damage since they're the most delicate. I moved them to my desk and I'm slowly trying to piece them back together. It's super hard with the bad tremors I have in my hands.
Enjoy and take your time. That Johan 69 Road Runner you have in the stack is one of my all time favorite models.
I think the Road Runner is pretty much unbuilt and complete. I got a bit of sticker shock after seeing the prices for glue and paint now. I found several small bottles of paint that hadn’t dried up with prices of 19 to 40 cents. I think glue back the was around the same price. I recently bought a bottle of Tamiya’s liquid glue and that was $6. I think the same paint is now over $3 and the small cans of spray paint is about $9. Are there any regular spray paints that work on plastic models. I can usually buy a couple of rattle cans for the price of those tiny ones. I’m not in any hurry at those prices. I’m just fixing the damaged ones for now.
The big misc rattle cans are up to$17 everywhere around here now and $9 for the Testors/Rustoleum. Good luck, I'm in the same situation
The big box stores locally carry spray paint for around $6.50 with cheaper brands as low as $3. I have to research a little to figure which are safe for plastics. I have plenty of junk parts I can experiment on. Another way I can experiment is if it doesn’t melt styrofoam it should be OK.
I've had better luck using the model specific spray paints such as Testors, Tamiya or an airbrush. The larger Krylon or Rustoleum cans from.box stores are hit or miss and often spray heavy, plus cure times are pretty long on models but I've seen other people have great luck with them. Either way, enjoy. Practice on some cheap stuff before diving into your Johan stash
That’s true, I’ve usually had really good results with model specific paint. I just wish it was less expensive. I don’t see Pactra paint out there. It was less expensive than Testors. It was just as good. I have a few cans of Krylon I can try on some broken body parts to check for compatibility.
Menards has the least expensive Testors hobby paints near me. Please don't take this as being political............ Wait and see what happens when the tarriffs kick in. BTW- The first AMT model kit I bought when I was a kid was at Uncle Bill's discount store for .88 cents. (1940 F0rd Deluxe Tudor Sedan 3 in 1 Customizing Kit) If you look at the part number on the boxes the last 3 didgits is the retail price when issued. 1/25 AMT 240-149 1940 FORD Deluxe Tudor Sedan 3in1 Customizing kit circa 1960 So retail woould be $1.49 Multiply $1.50 x 15 and you get $22.50 Multiply .15 cents paint x 15 and you get $2.25 (approx what you would pay at Menards) My take is everything is relative. I too have some old bottles of paint. Some of them are Pactra and those have .12 cents on them. I actually had better results with the Pactra. I really liked Testors Model Masters but those are gone too.
I’ve heard of Menards but haven’t seen any locally. That’s a good price for the main colors of paint. I wonder if they offer free shipping if you spend a certain amount. No, after checking there’s no break on shipping. Too bad.
This 60s Revell 57 Ranchero arrived in the mail today, rear bumper is off and included and it was built with out a engine which I have two correct engines that I am building one and hope to get it installed. Hood is glued shut so I hope I can get it open.
sometimes putting the body in the kitchen freezer for a couple of days renders the glue brittle enough to snap it out.
Sometimes the glue can get brittle from just being old. I’m often breaking off two parts for every part I reattach on my old models. They’ve been subjected to high and low temperatures in my attic for nearly 30 years.
I have had the Texaco one for 20+ years. When I first purchased, I glued a couple of pieces together and that was it. Instructions were for Joe's Power Plus, but decals for Texaco. Last week I ordered Joe's Power Plus and decided to build a three Bay Service Station similar to a Chevron Station I worked at in early '70s. Going with Joe's in memory of good friend that passed 9 years ago. I have started on it and try to do a little everyday. I am doing it in 2 modules to make it easier to handle. I like dioramas and have a few garage ones Plus 2 of the Snap On Fifties Garage. Lots of equipment/tool model kits. Problem is, they all need assembling. Excuse my temporary work area.
was someone here looking for "Richard Carroll" of model car fame? could this be him: Rod & Custom Models sorry for being vague, but the best i can do!
i remember those days. the evils of model car construction, when every seven year old was viewed with suspicion and thought to have embarked on a life of ruin.
Same here. Never an issue buying glue. The local hobby shop owner was a great guy and always kept a large stock of Mopar models, especially Johan. He daily drove Edsels, two were nicely restored, one a convertible then he had a winter beater Edsel for bad weather. This would have been in the early to mid-80s.
