Actually there is no reason to channel the body over the frame. Nice flat floor is nice…and makes the build easier!

The reason guys channeled the bodies over the small thin tubing frame, was because, even thought the frame tubing was chrome-moly, everyone thought(read: "just absolutely knew") that the frame was too pencil-thin & couldn't possibly hold the body up, much less function as a frame correctly & long-lived, to boot. The channel got rid of all the "whuh-fo's Q's" & the never-ending snide comments about that which they knew nothing of. Plus, it looks a little better, & at least appears, to be, lower. & of course, done correctly, you got a bellypan effect.

Gils' was also one of the nicer-finished VRods. Love that pose. Kent did a similar one. Was told it always left the CHIPies mumbling to themselves, since the stop was often for a fenderless vs weight-Q? Chuckle... IIRC, Gils' was also a Fuller-chassis.

    ^^^^
Original Tom Daniels' VRod concept drawing for the R&C VRod. Morphed from there. At least one VRod was built w/a "std" ~2"x3" steel tubing frame. Guys' name is Gary, is on HAMB, & it's back in his possession, lookin' good, has good proportions.

Sorry I don’t recall where I ran across this pic - I’ll add credit if anyone knows. Looks mid sixties time frame to me

I have that mag, just not at my fingertips. Was an odd small-format acvw & other small cars of the day mag. ~'64, iirc, maybe '62-ish. If I can find it, I'll post the mag name & date. Found at a swapmeet, when I was chasing any info on old V-rod possibilities.

Knew a guy who made one into a dune buggy/ rail.
Had paddle tires on it .

He ran McCreary sprint car tires on it on the street.

Can't find my box of V-Rod stuff/info/articles right now, but I do believe that red one, had an acvw (partial) chassis under it. Had the rear torsion bars assmbly, the tunnel & Napoleons' hat used. Don't remember iffen it had the acvw trailing-arm suspension used. But it was a neat build. I kinda liked how he emphasized the acvw mill thru the turtledeck.

IIRC, got to see Billys' V-Rod crusin' the St.Paul nats one year. I always found the proportions of the rear deck & tail, just a little bit "off". But still, a very nice ride. :) .

Yep, all the proportions were a little off…part of the charm, I guess. The only thing that really bothered me though, was the oversized tubing used for the side nerf bar.

This one I don't recognize. Info, please? Has good proportions, frame looks to be round tubing that follows the body & cowl, so's I'd venture a guess that it's either a Fuller job, or a nice job on a Speedway VX23. Note front discs, VX23 didn't come w/that option, also notice the exposed front torsion bar., also unusual. Seatback looks abit thick, inside legroom might be abit tight? Still... :) :) .

  19. It's funny when I was a kid I hated volks rods Now at 46 I would drive the snot out of a T-dub, Would put a wild '70s ribbon paint job, roll some some slots with white lettering bias ply tires and do a somewhat built 1600 something making about 80 or 90 horsepower so it would be fairly spry but not over the top so it's unreliable.

  20. I bought Billy Belmont's VWT from Billy Belmont many years ago after it was in an accident. Billy, my 2 sons and I had a hell of a time getting the "T" out of the back of Billy's garage. I only kept it a short while as someone came along that wanted it a lot more than I did.
