If only there existed an acceptable substitute for vacuum wipers.

    I should invent one....

The best thing I did for my '53 Chevy was find a 6 volt electric wiper motor from a '54 Chevy truck and combine it with the drive parts from a '55-'57 12 volt passenger car motor. If a '49-'54 Chevy has been converted to 12 volts, the '55-'57 car motor is a bolt on.

The best thing that I did for my 1960 Falcon was to bolt-in a Newport conversion.

It took about an hour, and re-used the original knob.

I made one once using a hand held torch propane tank and a check valve. It helped, but lost vac. too quickly. Made a bigger one using a refrigerant tank and the wipers would continue to work going up hills or tromping through the gears.

  5. About a half gallon. The bigger the better, as long as it fits somewhere. That big space behind the front wheel under the fender is a good spot.

  7. If you just need the wipers for a moment to pass a safety inspection, don't overthink it. A fitting anywhere in the intake plenum is good. You may be able to patch a T-fitting off an existing vac signal. Fittings and hoses can be removed and plugged as needed or returned to original state.
Any vac signal is fair game, except I don't recommend splicing anything into the brake booster hose if you have one. The less patching into the brake hose, the fewer leak potential places to cause a lack of brakes. That's meant as general advice for everybody. You likely have manual brakes.
