Hot Rods 1934 Gaz ( russian Ford)

    Yesterday this 1934 Gaz followed me home.
    Gaz is a manufacturer that build cars under Ford License , (the Gaz AA is like a Ford Model AA)
    It is "normal" size and not the smaller like the English model Y.
    I'm no expert on the 33/34 fords but this Gaz fordor looks like the usa model 40 but some differences:
    -The grill is different.
    -chassis looks a bit different and has parallel leaf spring front and back
    -it has juice brakes but I don't know this type.
    -there is a wooden subrail below the rocker ( don't know about this in usa models)
    -it looks like there was a hump/trunk on the back like some cars had at the time.
    The original engine and trans where not with the car and I don't know what engine used to be in there.

    It is cool to see cars like this popping up , i never new gaz made cars like the model 40.
    I got it cheap just to use the body to convert it to a 5w coupe.
    Maybe the frame is usable but I will see when tearing it apart.
    For now I'm on the hunt for quarter panels.

    The wooden subrail/structure.
    Do the usa models this ?

    Banjo axle on parallel springs.
    There was cut down torque tube with the car that's suggest that it was closed drive but that would not work with this type of spring setup ???

    Holy crap !!!! What a score. You are going to have a ball when it gets on the road. It is gonna fool a lot of people. You have to do a build thread.

    I think it’s pretty amazing cars like this survived the war. The Model 40 guys will be all over this, be prepared to take more photos! Post more when you start your conversion, Carp.

    Turns out there's a Wikipedia page for that car. It may have some useful information for you. For one thing, even though it looks like a 1934 Ford it appears it didn't go into production until 1936. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAZ-M1

    Very cool! USA models did not have wooden sub rails, but Aussie cars had different rails, perhaps wood? dunno.

    With the back end already cut like that, you won't have as many keyboard warriors bad mouthing you about a coupe conversion. "Little Gaz Coupe" has a ring to it.

  12. Dash is the same as '34 Ford, Hood is about 4 inch longer than '34 Ford because it had a straight 6.
    I would say that wooden rocker was put in there by some "Eastern European" backyard builder some 50 odd years ago. Did you get all the patch panels from the guy ? I ordered them from Mac's a good 25 years ago and they were a perfect fit. Thinking back i signed up here in 2003 and allready had the car a few years before.

    Yes i got some patch panels and rockers with it.
    Lot of work but worth saving !

    Kind of looks to me with the U-bolt set up and what looks to be a grease fitting going into what appears to be some kind of a collar that rear rotates in that set up would work with a torque tube. Or maybe I'm hallucinating?

    Chevy used parallel springs with torque tube, the rear end is mounted on grease sleeves.
    I don't know if anybody saw but last year Russians led an attack in Ukraine with a column of GAZ /Ford model B trucks. That was surreal.

    Vent windows! That's really cool, I never saw a 33/34 Ford with vent wing windows in the doors before. This seems like a perfect car to make into a 5w coupe, I'll be following along and I hope you post progress pictures when you cut into it. I cut up a really rough '33 a few years ago and I got pretty far on it but I ended up with a bit nicer '34 starting point and sold my '33, I'm hoping to get back after it sometime soon.

    I found this. GAZ-AA, based on the ford model AA of the 30’s. I didn’t easily find anything showing the GAZ-67 (model B derivative) but if they have them and they can make them run, you can be sure they were/are using them.

    For my fordor to 5w coupe conversion i’m gonna need some dimensions.
    I don’t have a 34 5w close by but i will take some patterns of a real coupe in the future but for now i can go on with planning if i have these dimensions.
    Can somebody give me the measurements like on the pics below.
    Greatly appreciated!

    Ff somebody have drawings , patterns or blueprint of a 34 coupe i would love to have it.

    I found a pair of quarter panels , they will be new and handmade.
    I have to wait with the build till my garage is finished , i will start a build thread.
    In the mean time i’m collecting parts.
    Today i picked up a 255 french flatty wich i will take apart and freshen up.

    The French flathead is a cool piece of history. Some unique water pump/engine mounts on there, I never saw those before.

    I had the same thoughts on the water pumps, especially the left one. Can "normal" ones be fitted instead?

    I thought I read that the US style pumps bolt up and the only difference is the bolt sizes are metric in the French block. I could be wrong though.

    Years ago I read that the threads were standard except for the exhaust manifold studs.

    Just make sure to start 'em by one thread and then run them in with an impact.:D
