I am trying to find out who would have built a fiberglass 32 ford 3 window about 1969. I have one that is on an original v-8 frame with a 312 y-block, 3 deuces, with a 39 transmission and all 40 Ford running gear. It was from the Memphis TN area and still has a parking sticker in the window from 1971. I have looked everywhere for info and nothing goes back that far. It is a quality body with exposed hinges and has never been painted. It has a 1965 Mustang steering box and 59 chevy steering wheel. It is a survivor and I plan to keep it the way I found it. Can anybody help me solve this mystery?
That was when I was a young un, but I sure don't remember any 'glass coupes that far back. Hoods, fenders, doors, even bantam and T bodys along with the growing FC stuff, but I'd think a Willys before a 3 window. I'd check old ads to see if anything was done and when. Here's the Hot Rod mag archives. It's going to take some digging, but I'd guess that if these were commercially available, not just a DIY one-off, they would advertise here. https://www.hotrod.com/hotrod-archive/ BTW, first post. Welcome to the HAMB, you might want to do an Intro.
Being in my late teens then, I also don't remember anything that far back. Might be a one-off job. Digging into magazine archives is a good start.
If the parking sticker is on the windshield, perhaps it is a later built body with an old windshield.
I've been trying to think of the name all day, tip of my old tongue, in west central Nebraska...he's been making fiberglass bodies for a long time. Anyone got the name? maybe...
Yes, Dwight bond? in Gibbon Ne. I went to his auction in about 2016 or so. He was making fiberglass packard roadsters a long time back
@BIG ED 48 , post some pics, Its Possible !!! I know of few people that made body's, Not a 3 w but 5w, non chop with drain rails off one of his steel body, For them selves Not for sale, Not every one was trying to make $, Well before dial up Internet .
Found this, maybe BIG ED 48 has a lightweight racecar body that was rebuilt/strengthened for a streetcar.
This rabbit seems hard to catch but there seems to be plenty of discussion about FG deuce roadster bodies. Still looking........ there was a guy named John Brown from Marengo ,Illinois that made glass bodies back around the 70 s but I only remember roadsters.
Could a possible scenario be that someone took an old 3w and replaced the steel body with a glass one but refitted all the original parts so it still looked like it was before the swap? This would have been done later than the 60s but if the car was a survivor from the 60s it could still look like a survivor but have a new glass body.
Photos mean a lot in cases like this. There are guys who will remember the Y block in a 32 from back then before they ever remember that that 32 had a glass body. Good clear photos of the car as it sits now would help a lot. The use of the Mustang steering box didn't get started until the 70's as far as memory serves. I remember that there was an article on doing it in a magazine an not long after you started seeing them at rod trots as guys replaced their worn out steering boxes.
Yes, pictures would help. Also even though there isn't a situation where it is between 2 or more manufacturers, giving some details of the body such as firewall, floor, bracing and hinges/latches would help.
