On the "Slick 60s" Forum (which doesn't have much action of late) shows a preference for the Carolina Classics reproduction parts. LMC and Dennis Carpenter also sell the "same" part at a lessor cost, but does the lower cost come at the cost of thinner metal? I just sent an order to Carolina Classics based on the better reviews they get but I can wait awhile to purchase the radiator support. For those of you that have purchased a radiator support for your "Slick" what has been your experience? Thanks!!
@jimmy six Your suggestion was great...except no one is sharing shipping weights. Dennis Carpenter shows 14 gauge, LMC no real description and Carolina Classics describes theirs as "steel nice quality"
Probably doesn't help but I bought one from LMC about 10 years ago. Typical imported quality. It fit kinda so so. Seemed light compared to the original. They may have improved since then
While not the most complicated chunk of sheet metal, I understand why your inclined to buy a new piece. Mine needed most of the bottom and part of the sides replaced, but after looking into buying a new one and shipping to northwest Alberta Canada, I just went ahead and fixed mine, it was pretty rotten but all there so it made for good measurements and template. Besides which I’m a cheap fucker, so I wound up making all the parts needed. Maybe not helpful but a bump for your thread.
@Wanderlust I'd initially figured I would repair it but there is enough of it gone/ fell apart that it is a little hard to tell what is what. I'm 80, I don't have 50 years to repair it When I built the Studebaker I used four different cars and everyone had a good radiator support The floors and body mounts were about as bad on the Stude as this truck Wish my body looked as good as yours does! Thanks
Wish my body looked as good as yours does! Thanks[/QUOTE] While the outside looks pretty good the inside wasn’t quite as good , made my own cab mounts
Not to be an ass but your starting from a much better point than I did I’m 17 years junior to you but friends are already falling away so time is of essence. From the field to the road took 14 months, yah I was feeling the pressure.
These trucks come up at the wrecking yard 61-64 should be the same or similar enough. Or even as parts trucks on the usually sites. if the aftermarket tailgates are lighter. You bet the core support will be too. I missed out on one at my wrecking yard because I was lazy about. My truck needs one. But it not a total piece of rusted flakes.
@Wanderlust you did a nice job of making your rust bucket look like a well preserved original truck, I like it! Thanks for the pictures, now I don't feel so bad I've ordered some replacement panels and cushions but they were out of stock on the cab supports. I may fabricate my own now that I have some dimensions off what is left of the original. Not sure that I want to "fabricobble" my radiator support though
