Looking for info on installing Chrysler 6 valves in a flathead ford? I know this was a popular upgrade back in the day. What is involved with the install? Thanks in advance. -Gabe
Are you talking valves from a flathead Mopar six, or from a slant six? Honestly, 1.6 inch exhaust valves from a SBC adapt well to Ford flatheads. An old stock car driver around here told me that he used to put 1.75 inch intake valves from an early Olds V8 in his racing flatheads.
If the stem diameter and overall length check out, can't see why not. That said, valve technology has come a long way. Hi flow SBC valves are about as good as it gets and work great in a flathead.
I am following the red book; HOW TO HOP UP FORD & MERCURY V8 ENGINES. It mentioned Desoto 6 valves for the intake of the flathead.
I don't doubt that that was a good idea in 1950, but today there are better choices that are more easily obtained.
The engine cares not what the valves were meant for. Size matters! Head size[ diameter ], stem diameter and length. The performance shop that did the head for my avatar used ' "generic" valves. Ben
