    Hello all,
I would like to know which housing option is best for a 1950 Mercury.
    1. 1972 and below Ford F100 truck housing.
    2. 1971 - 1973 Ford Mustang housing.
    3. Custom 9 inch housing with center section centered.
    4. Custom 9 inch housing with pinion centered.
    5. Your suggestion.
    Thank you all.

I think the important consideration would be the correct axles. Do you want to retain the old 5 1/2" bolt circle?

I will be buying new axles for whatever housing I end up with.

You're doing it backwards. Try this instead:

    A) Mock up the car, at ride height, with the wheels & tires you'll be using.
    B) Measure the distance between the wheel mounting surfaces.
    C) Buy (or narrow) a rearend & brake ***embly to fit that measurement.

I know what the distance between the wheel mounting surface is, I just need to know where the center section needs to be. Thanks.

So often replaced with "I'll order the wheels when I get everything built".
Then I say "let me know how that works out".

4 still holds as my answer.
You need to do a lot more first, as Just Gary suggested. An even ‘apparently fitting’ rear end might not work if you can not get the tires past the drum and fender when you need to change a tire. Too many factors for simple answers. Building a custom, or just about any car, takes trial and error and try again.
