I've had good luck shipping larger items via USPS just by wrapping it and sticking a label on it until recently. I shipped a bumper out at the end of January to Indianapolis and it's been sitting there since. Just wondering has anyone had any luck with wrapping a car part and shipping with UPS, or FedEx?

People have shipped larger things to me, like seats or a transmission, by putting it on a pallet and dropping it off at a Fastenal hardware location, who then will ship it to another fastenal location and it can be picked up there. Its been a couple of years since the last time, but it was pretty reasonably priced and they even loaded it in the truck with the forklift when it was something heavier.

  6. While USPS is the best deal on shipped items like that up to 130" girth, their service has poor lately IMHO. Shipping rates for all the major carriers have risen dramatically over the last couple of years, and it pays to shop around. Greyhound doesn't ship large items anymore, and Fastenal has many restrictions now.

    Hello,

Our experience with UPS is outstanding for any returns or shipping out small or large items. If a return label is not on the package, they will create one for you. But, for those large boxes, wrapped odd shaped gifts, as long as it is wrapped and can be weighed on their scales, then they will create a shipping label for the odd ball package.

We have also used Fed Ex as a shipping point, but our favorite is the UPS group. The key is, as long as it is wrapped and there is a place to put the self stick UPS label, then all is good. We used to write our names and addresses on the packages, but they print out their own labels and cover the address area. Or in the case of odd ball shapes, where ever there is a flat space to attach the UPS label.

    Jnaki

It beats the USPS office rules, although they, too accept plenty of odd ball wrapped items all year long. We had to carry in a large item to the USPS office and have it weighed for their own shipping label. No, it was not a hot rod part, but a large art print in a frame. Some companies use strictly USPS instead of UPS or Fed Ex...

    Note:
Our friendly UPS store owner is also a Notary and helped us out plenty of times when an official signature item was necessary. So, the UPS not only does great shipping of packages, they serve the whole community for their needs when necessary.

    Note 2:
The odd thing is/was, back in 1961, when our 671 sbc motor was still for sale, we had offers, but my brother stood by his choice of cost. so, one guy called from some place in the midwest and wanted to buy the motor set up. he offered to come out west to help in the crate building and ship it back to his house.

But, there was no UPS or Fed Ex back then. So, his solution was a local moving company that travels to the Midwest. The companies contract on to add various shipping crates and boxes to fill up a semi filled truck. So, he arrived at our house and we proceeded to get the flat crate wood planks locally and made a nice, well supported crate for the 671 SBC motor. It was well supported and secured down to prevent any movement.

It was neatly packaged and shipped back to the Midwest. Some companies do this type to fill up their semi empty trucks/vans to make their loads full. Plus, it is additional income for them. The guy from the midwest flew back to his home and he called and said the complete motor arrived without any damage. YRMB

I had horror stories with UPS-- I would over insure the package figuring I am playing the odds that UPS would lose or damage the item about every 6 months. Had an aluminum intake manifold broken. Had to run over by a forklift or? UPS would pick up at my door step. I wanted a package sent, left it where I normally do, The driver left the receipt and left the package. I had packages missing in transit. Many issues with UPS-- Switched to Fed Ex and USPS. -- not as many issues

This is interesting, they have a page for this exact issue.

Then you get into freight. This is a whole different setup. They have very one-sided rules and laws that favor the shipper. There has been a huge increase in cars lost, damaged and stolen recently. Parts can suffer too. Research before considering this.

I tried to ship a small '38 Plymouth pickup bumper about 10 years ago with the local ups without a box , and the ups woman lost her mind . My Son was with me and is very calm and he tried to reason with her till he was upset which is unheard of from him . She made us go across town to a bicycle store and get a box that a bicycle comes in before she would ship it . I quit doing business with ups that day , even though I believe it's a local problem not a company wide problem . I now ship with Fed Ex and have nothing but good experiences with them .

That's part of the reason I ask. A while back I tried shipping a steering column through the UPS store and she measured up this giant box and it was going to cost more than double what the person was paying for it. I wend to the post office by my house and he told me to wrap it up good, cover the sharp corners with carboard and I'm good to go.

I've had similar experiences with usps in the past myself .

  19. There are a dozen threads just like this on the HAMB & every other car forum!

You will get positive & negative posts about EVERY shipping company. Some areas of the country USPS is great, others not so much...Same with UPS & FEDEX.

Bottom line is ...You pays your money, you take your chances! You will never get an answer on a web forum that you can trust 100%

    God Bless

Shipping costs kill a lot of sales. Just checked with UPS today to find out what a 1932 Ford Brake drum & backing plate would cost to ship from Connecticut to California. $105!!!!!!!!!! look for it on my spot at Hershey in October. Bob

ship using the internet and have them pick it up at your home or work. check pricing online as well.. just because someone works at the UPS store that does not mean they know how to ship things. NEVER have them box it up.

Pirateship.com. Ships thru UPS at about 40% the cost of going directly through UPS. I've shipped several things and never had a problem.

  23. Find someone with a business account at ups or fedex. I've sent a '36 Ford axle via fedex in the past, all I did was open up a used box, cut it down, wrapped the box around the axle and taped it up with about a 1/2 roll of packing tape. They really just wanted a clean, light colored place to put the sticker.

I have resorted to, if it is a bigger item, with reasonable distance and not in an absolute hurry, make a weekend out of it, stay over night someplace different and enjoy a break from regular every day.
Take the back roads unseen but that is just me.
Again depending on the distance - or meet half way.
It all depends on what it is. Most fellas are open to help with $ for gas or something.
At least you know, it isn't going to be tossed around.
Just a thought - again depending how far ( or in a hurry or not, and absolutely no ice, snow , so spring to fall ok )

Long ago I had a complete Model A pickup bed sent to me via Greyhound and picked it up in the downtown Phila. terminal. Also had 34 pickup cab sent to me via local Fastenal. Easy pickups with my truck when they used to offer it. Nowadays I use USPS as FedEx and UPS have gotten $$$. You take a chance any way you do it. MantuaJohn

Usually I try to set up something like that, but this time it would have been to much of a drive for a $50 part.

Yes! Most of them that have 'UPS Store' signage are not UPS, but a franchisee. I quit using UPS several years ago for that some other reasons, like failure to pay for damages. That said, I box everything so that I feel it will survive a 4-5 foot fall to concrete. So far I've had one damage claim, Fedex and they handled it well. That's over a 25 year period. USPS lost one, but that's another story.
