    When I’m stuck in the house, say waiting on repairmen… like today, I typically pass the time doing crosswords. And in doing so, I just came across the following clue and defining answer;

Entering into evidence from Friday August 8, 1996, 38 down “updated clunker”. Answer “streetrod”.

This is THE paper of record, the New York Times and if Will Shortz says it, well it must be so. It appears the term has nothing to do with fiberglass bodies and coil overs.

There is the original term Street Rod.

    That's the one I like.

Back then ( maybe even now) I think street rods were a bit more refined than hot rods , less muscle , more bustle ...

So did my dad. No eraser so he’d be sure of an answer before he wrote it in.

My dearly departed mother got me hooked on these things when I was young. "Always with a pen! "
was her rule. Like life, we make our mistakes boldly and without fear.

I got tired of paying for the paper. They got vary expensive and had less news in them. Since I was only doing the puzzles I opted for the NYT games on line. I still don't read their drivel but I get access to decades of puzzles.

Want a challenge? Do a Saturday puzzle from 30 years ago where they reference "Sonny on the hill" (Bono) or Seattle squad (Sonics). Not only do you have the fun of the puzzle but you have to remember what year it is.

Damn I wish it would warm up. And where the hell is that repairman? Why do they tell you between 8 and noon and they still haven't shown by 2:45? Another 15 minutes and it's happy hour.

Personally, I am not into categorizing everyone and everything into specific boxes. It's more of a "I know it when I see it" kinda thing for me. If I can't take a picture of it without having my thread moved to the dark side "nontraditional threads", then it's a bit too street rod for the HAMB.

Buddy of mine when to AZ a few weeks back and retuned with a a handful of Fords of the 32-34 vintage. He sent me pics and none of them I can share on our traditional forum. He is the street rod king! BTW, if you are looking for a SAR assembled, bare steel, Brookville 32 coupe, full fendered car on a IFS frame, let me know. He's looking for 35k, so if you always wanted a streetrod, but were afraid to ask...I don't know where I was going with that.

Hot Rod name for me is a steel pre-1940s car, built for racing the street /strip.
While the term Street rod makes me think of steel or glass built with up to 1950s cars, competitive at car shows some have billet aluminum covers, independent suspension and a high-end stereo

    No air
    No heat
    No whining
    Now that's a hot rod!

  24. I appreciate the discipline and historical accuracy that the H.A.M.B. imposes to support traditional hotrods, and especially the flexibility to accept variances to that discipline tolerated by moderators. I understand not wanting to embrace the late model wheels, tires, lighting, ifs/irs, modern engines and transmissions (even if I'm unsure where the grey area is regarding my 351W and AOD and power-assisted brakes). I've got a '29AA and wonder just where I'll be cubby-holed on the spectrum. Sure, it's not strictly traditional, but the 1960 F-350 rear axle, differential, dually wheels, spindles and brakes are period-correct, dammit! Do you reject my truck because it is a tonner (actually 1-1/2 tons, according to the frame)? The engine four years too new for the '65 cutoff? The transmission (which design harkens back to the planetary Model T in many ways)? I'll tell you this. It's all steel, mostly original (replacement cowl and lower door patches) including the fenders, which will reflect the near-century of use and abuse. It's a hotrod. not built for racing but for daily use and to savor the tradition of reconstructing it myself using later, upgraded mechanical improvements and innovative fabrication (homemade tilt steering wheel, four-bar rear suspension) in the spirit of hotrodding that goes back to the origins of the tradition. Why would you want to call it anything else but a hotrod?

It was decided some time ago that because traditionally in the time frame we cover here (65 and older build styles) that Hot rod trucks were typically 1/2 tons. With that said all larger trucks are posted in the antiquated forum. That doesn't mean that your truck isn't cool enough or traditional enough. It is just the way we chose to draw the line. hope that makes sense

As I understand it, Hot Rods were the down and dirty jalopies known for street racing and general hooligan activities, and were associated with young men and their fixed up old cars.
I believe Hot Rod magazine actually raised the Street Rod name as an attempt to improve the appearance of the hobby and distance its image from the troubled earlier visions of the same vehicles.
The term "street rods" was suppose to portray a more mainstream image of the hot rods.

  29. I fully understand and really don't have a problem with the establishment of H.A.M.B. traditional standards. It's just that what I'm building is and always has been a hotrod in my mind. The H.A.M.B. community is the most caring, generous, ingenious and supportive bunch of wrench twisters I could hope to meet. I'm hoping someday soon to post a few more pictures of my project - maybe even a first start-up video - that will show so many members what they've helped me put together with their advice, encouragement and even tools.

  30. 35 across is "itis" and 40 down is "Nena".

BTW I have all stupid random crap at home.............I'm with @Moriarity. The Giant in the first picture was my Grandfathers note the homemade base.
