"Bad Chad" recently paid a visit to Terri @Born a HotRodGal & Darryl @hollenbeck32's Think what you might about Chad, but I found this recent video post on his YouTube channel quite entertaining, insightful, & very informative:
I actually watched it, yes, think what you want about chad but if you ever plan on painting a car or doing bodywork, even if youre already a pro, its well worth watching! What a great glimpse into the methods of Hollenbeck!
Super cool of Darryl to take his time and explain the tedious process of doing it right. Thank you for sharing this, Todd. Also, he mentioned the '36 3W that was in the paint booth and the trip it had taken to Nebraska. I happened to take a photo of it while it was here. Super nice car!
Chad did a bunch of these when he was in California for the GNRS. He has one on Gambino Customs, Oz Kustoms, Galpin. Unfortunately, he makes them hard to watch at times as he asks the same questions/makes the same remarks repeatedly.
Would love to watch this Hollenbeck being interviewed by a human being rather than whatever that was........struggled to get to 15 mins before having to switch off. Who is that cretin? Interesting at the beginning about what Hollenbeck said about painting the inside of fenders with bed liner, as last time I was over in San Fran and popped into Brizio for a wander around I was intrigued by the black bed liner under the fenders. Also interested to know Hollenbeck painted Clapton's baby blue 32 roadster, as that was in Brizio's finishing bay the first time I ever visited Brizio's back in 2004.
That was great of Darryl to take the time and explain the process. I enjoyed that and respect all the work that goes into his paint process....Well done!
NOTE: Darryl paints a great majority (but not all) of the cars coming out of . . . and his wife Terri is Roy Brizio's youngest sister
Yes, I was well aware of both of those things having visited Brizio on numerous occasions over the last two decades, and spent many a chat with Dave C over the shop counter before he retired to Sacramento a few years back. As said, I would love to see a proper interview with Darryl by someone other than that cretin who did that video and made it so un-watchable that I had to switch off after 15 mins.
What’s the stink block do? And I’m confused about when he uses it. I thought Darryl was talking about using it on the filler, and Chad was talking about using it on the primer. What grit is the stuff, and why would it be better than sandpaper on a properly formed block?
I'll never get a chance to see the inside of the Hollenbeck shop, was at the GNRS when his Roadster won, thanks to Chad for taking us along on the tour. Bob
Stink block is pumice stone. Often used for cleaning BBQ grills. He uses it on his filler. The advantage is you don't have to create a different shaped block for every shape on a car the block does it itself.
Holy shit Chad's a hack who uses 40 grit to nock down mud anymore. Learn some tricks from the great one Darrell though.
With apologies to @K13, @Jeff Norwell, & all the other Canadian HAMBers . . . Chad's not from another planet . . . he’s from CANADA
Darryl said in the video that it was an insulation product, so I did some looking around, and found a product from Owens Corning called Foamglas. They describe it as having sulphur in it as well as other things, like microscopic glass. Now I'm not sure if that's what he's using or if it's the same thing as you mentioned, but I couldn't find a distributor for it anywhere in my part of the country. It is more widely used in Europe. I'd like to give it a try if anyone comes up with a supplier.
Nick - My pleasure! My son moved to Lincoln, NE in September . . . He called me on Friday the 27th to let me know that "a bunch of California Hot Rods had invaded his new home town" . . . I reminded him that several of my Hot Rodder friends were on the SPEEDWAY INVITATIONAL 2024 RODFATHER'S FINAL, FINAL tour: . . . and suggested he drive down to the to say hello to some of my friends (i.e., Roy Brizio, Steve Moal, Scott Hawley, Gary Boler, Don Lindfors, etc.) that had made the drive to Lincoln . . . he didn't get to speak with any of them, but did take a video & a bunch of pics . . . including this one of Nick Testa's '36 3wd and Steve & Theresa Moal's "Roadchamp" '32 Roadster:
