Make sure the WPs line up with the other pulleys and order the thick belt ASAP. That's one of the little parts that can hold things up.
See if you have ignition, carb and gaskets in local stock too. Hopefully the shop has enough sway to get things local, even if they end up going back to the warehouse.

I still remember the gut drop I felt the first time I pulled the head off a running engine. "Oh God, what have I done? Will this thing ever run again?"

    IMG_0485.jpg

Fortunately now it's becoming pretty routine.

    IMG_0486.jpg

This cylinder has even compression with all the others lol. Looks like a spark plug tip got dropped in there... it ran, so, fuck it.

Got it pretty clean & pretty far apart today. Hopefully tomorrow - weather permitting - we'll get some paint on it.

Hot rodding in a lube shop means staying out of the way. Glad I have a patient boss.

Block is painted. Using the heads, intake and junk water pumps to mask the gasket surfaces (since they still need to get prepped and painted). The oil pan also needs to come down to get properly cleaned before paint. Still thinking probably white heads and intake.

Perfect? No, but it's a dump truck engine going in a 70 year old hot rod that has structural coat hangers. It's gonna look pretty damn fine...

Not that you don't have enough to do, but would it be a good time to push the engine outside and flush the block before you replace the water pumps? I like the red and white.

@RMONTY I saw your SD thread and did a very quick skim through it. Nice work. I'd only seen you in Trevor's posts.
I'm sure not trying to get into the middle of you two Texans tussling over a flathead, just goofing!:)

Trevor knows I'm giving shit. We are the best of friends. We break a lot of stuff together.
If you haven't seen it, check out Trevor's first thread "Jumping in the deep end" I think it's called. I wasted a lot of time training Trevor to fix things right, and now look at him go! I am super surprised he is actually painting something!!

It's nice to be called a young-in since I officially became a senior citizen a few weeks ago, but Trevor is definitely a young-in....but has his shit together and is a damned fine hot rodder! I'm proud to call him a friend!

Might not hit the target on getting the engine together tomorrow but we're inching closer...

  15. Keep doing the small things, and soon the big things are done.

I'm not a flathead guy, but I think that old truck hoghead bellhousing is what is used to mount a newer open drive trans, such as a T-5 with a simple adapter plate. So that may bring some money in as a swap meet selling part. A more knowledgeable flathead guy can confirm. But if you plan to keep the old Ford 3 speed trans, that hoghead and cross shaft may be worth some money. The old big truck trans itself is no more than scrap, but save the bearing retainer off it.

I'm not planning on running the bypass filter (at least not on the head). Is it OK to just plug the in/out ports or should I connect them to each other? I'd like to go full flow with a spin on filter but I'm not ready yet.

No problem haha. I wasn't sure myself. I think I like it, but until it's sitting in the car I won't really know. Easy enough to shoot some red enamel on them later if it doesn't turn out the way I'm hoping. Either way, these heads aren't staying forever. Sid has a couple sets of finned aluminum heads in the stash and I'm intending to make an offer to Guy on one or the other.

Now if I could just get an hour or so to prep all the gasket surfaces & bang this turd together we'll be cooking.

You are probably aware of this but be sure that the flywheel you get is for an 8BA with 10” clutch (not an earlier V8). The easiest way to tell is if the pressure-plate bolts are drilled all the way through. If they are blind, it is an earlier style and will not work-even though it will bolt up.

I wouldn't have known how to tell but I trusted Iron Trap who I bought the flywheel from. Incidentally, it turned out that this engine already had a 10" flywheel (but the clutch was rusted to it and would have needed to be resurfaced anyway). I never bothered checking because I had always heard the big trucks had 11" flywheels, but this engine has been rebuilt, so who knows.
I don't remember what I paid for this engine now, but it was 5 years ago and doesn't seem like it was much. $250? It was non running and had been outside for a while but fired right up for us after unsticking it.

We were very busy today but was able to get the heads installed. Got the transmission bolted up & we were all fired up to try and stab it in but for some reason the clutch plate seized on the input shaft and now won't come back apart. Having some difficulty separating them... I am going to try to get behind the bellhousing and unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel.

Sid had the engine LOW. But it's in. Clutch linkage fell right in place & works perfectly... one pedal down, two to go.

There is really no provision for the transmission mounts. Not sure what Sid had going on for that. I'll figure something out.

Obviously, this will be coming back out soon - the frame and body need paint after all.

I need to buy a SCT or something and get after it when it warms up, but I do intend to paint the whole car. Another week of shitty cold weather ahead of us in Texas so I want to get some of the mechanical stuff out of the way... going to try and fab up a trans crossmember and exhaust while it's too cold to paint.

  28. Well I was already a fan of your build. I had feared you were in the "patina" crowd as I hadn't really noticed any reference to paint previously. But I kept quiet as it was still cool. You're last couple comments raised the cool level a few pegs lol

Haha- I can appreciate nice patina but this car has rust, not patina. It needs to get fixed. Sid rolled 3 different kinds of house paint onto it - so I don't feel a big need to get a perfect paint job on it, but I want it to look nice.

  30. What color(s) you thinking? If you were closer I'd be down for helping with paint prep. I'm known for moving fast in that area lol
