Projects uncle Charlie's hot rod model A projects

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tb33anda3rd, Feb 19, 2025.

  1. Uncle Charlie [aka super slacker] started working on another model A project, well actually two, before he even finished his model T hot rod.
    build here; https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/t-body-on-a-frame.1278530/
he was given a model A chassis and was told it had a bad rear axle, he got it running and restored the brakes, mounted a cowl but found , not only was the rear noisy but the clutch chattered and the motor leaked oil out the rear main badly. IMG_9838.jpg

  2. we found another chassis and another cowl which Charlie got running and it ran well so he swopped the brakes over from chassis number 1. the plan is to keep scrounging parts for chassis number one while he builds number two. IMG_1983.jpg
here is Charlie robbing hinges off number one chassis

  3. plan with chassis number two is to build a pickup cab. Charlie had a set of doors from a 4dr model A so we built a subframe , adapted the front doors to the cowl and cut down the rear doors IMG_1981.jpg

  9. he was sent those by mistake and the tire company gave them to him real cheap so they didn't have to take them back.
most everything on these chassis were free or close to free. mostly other peoples discards.

  15. pieces I made in place. and a side shot of the 4 dr doors cut down to make the B pillar of the cab. the back of the cab will be a couple inches bigger than a stock pickup and the doors will be flush. Back of the cab will more closely follow the lines of a 28-29 pickup cab with a "twist".

  16. took the remainder of the 4 door rear doors and a 2 door rear window garnish that Charlie had back to my shop. thought I could make a rear window for the truck cab. image6.jpeg image9.jpeg

  17. cut the back and upper side of the rear doors window opening , and the pieces I cut off the front side of the rear door window openings. I cut them to match the 2 door garnish molding image7.jpeg image5.jpeg image4.jpeg

  20. we made up the top supports that connected the top of the windshield post to the B pillar. then connected the back edge of them together with a roof support beam I took from a 65 suburban parts truck.

  23. we put a middle crossmember in the roof
then Charlie decided we should chop it, we decided a 3" chop would be perfect. we removed the doors, cut off the top

  25. we then cut the windshield bottom off, removed 3" and welded it up.
Charlie got tired as we started cutting the doors so we called it a day. image7.jpeg
