Wow, action, several years later and the memories keep coming back…

    Hello,

Same dragstrip in Long Beach/Wilmington, but replace the Pontiac with a 1940 Willys Coupe. Then move it down the track near the finish line. The final resting place was the spectator side, wedged into a chain link fence looking exactly like the above photo. Flames coming out of both windows, flames shooting through the floor as there was now a huge hole in the floor.

Too hot to touch the door handle to open the door. But, luckily, my brother was back by the finish line on the gravel area, being wheeled into the white Pontiac ambulance by our friend, Mr. Childers.

Atts Ono was with me/us all through the event. We were the first two spraying the fire with our red cans. He stayed with the burning Willys Coupe until the flames burned themselves out. So many red cans were littered all over the ground by helping drag racers and spectators. But, it was too powerful and by another hour, after everyone had gone home, the fire was out and the security folks made everyone leave.

Atts Ono and I went back the next day to trailer the burned out Willys Coupe back to his house a few blocks away in the backyard concrete pad to disassemble everything. YRMV

  13. Buying a snack at the milk bar ( they had everything ) in the mid 1950s and of to Rosebud beach just across the road. My avatar was everywhere in those years.

Ab Jenkins was more known for his Morman Meteor but this was a speed run to break the existing 24 hour record for production automobiles. Ab drove a ‘33 Pierce-Arrow V-12 for 24 hours at an average speed of 117.77 mph.
The V-12 had been ported and relieved, a reground cam was used and the compression was raised a bit, along with the fenders and windshield having been removed. Apparently some modifications were permitted for AAA record runs.
I met Marv, AB’s son, at the 1999 NHRA Reunion in Bakersfield, he was an interesting guy and we corresponded a few times. A few years later this book came out, it’s an interesting read on a father and son consumed with speed.
