  2. Wow !!! Porky Zartman,Dave Hales and Fred Bear all on one post only missing K.S Pitman, Chuck Stolze and Gene Altizer and we would have the complete S&S racing team. I am in ahh of the accomplishments and the history these gentlemen share at one point they held the A/GS, A/G, B/G, C/G, and D/G records at the same time. Hell they even represented the U.S.A. as members of the US drag team.

Anyone familiar with drag racers/gasser drivers knows that we are living in a time of losing some of the biggest names the sport will ever know.
The list of famous drivers is the whos who list of racing. Just the other day (March 12th) we lost the famous funny car driver Shirl Greer at the age of 75. He was a former NHRA champion and a really nice guy.
K.S Pittman was one of the greatest Gasser men of all time and Bob Tasca SR. had some of the baddest funnys around. Now their gone.
We are on the verge of loosing not just another great driver but a super nice guy. Pork Zartman was the driver of the Filty Forty Willys owned by Charlie Hill . Pork was known for his driving and shifting skill as he always came out of the box with the front end hanging up in the air.
Pork is terminally ill with stage 4 cancer and it has progressed from his chest to his brain. As of this post he is recieving morphine to ease the pain and will no longer be able to verbally communicate with anyone.

Im sorta new here and I hate to post this bad news but my passon runs deep for the founders of the sport and maybe someone could start a - Gone but not forgotten -thread in honor of our fallen heros.
I sent a photo of Pork with Linda Vaughn and a shot of his Willys. G.S.

I hope by now you realize this post has come to the top again for the following reason:

We are on the verge of loosing not just another great driver but a super nice guy. Pork Zartman was the driver of the Filty Forty Willys owned by Charlie Hill . Pork was known for his driving and shifting skill as he always came out of the box with the front end hanging up in the air.

On Page 2, Post # 47 there's a pic of Pork racing the Willys coupe #445. That coupe belonged to my friend of many decades Al Tschida. There was nothing better than going to the Indy Nationals and watching the high winding 4 speed gassers. If you go back and read this old thread you will see that Al is mentioned a few times. I had the good fortune to have a small part in those exciting "Gasser Days"

The reason for posting on this old thread is to let the remaining gasser lovers of that period know that Al passed away a few days ago at age 73-74. He was a local hero but more important he was an honest, humble guy. The best kind of friend.

Some may remember Al went on to campaign a funny car named "Cheetah"

I hope no one here feels that I am intruding on this thread about Pork. Running against him and Larry T. and the other top C/Gassers of the time only created a great deal of respect for each and every one of them.

It would be nice to get Larry Roberts (Crew Chief and Sometimes Driver) on here. I know he lives in Hanover but don't know if he does internet. Pork Or Larry shown as Drivers in this photo. I know he's in his 80's.[IMG]
