Gaucho, the nomadic and colourful horseman and cowhand of the Argentine and Uruguayan Pampas (gr***lands), who flourished from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century and has remained a folk hero similar to the cowboy in western North America.

I can relate to that! My service truck had a tool bed on it with six boxes on it plus a bed. It was full of everything! Tools, parts, wire, metal…and I could always find something in there to get the job done….most of the time! When that truck was p***ed down to my ***istant, he being the neat freak he was, stsrted removing everything I had collected, untill the tool bed was completely empty except for his hand held tool box!

In looking back to the old days of 1953 when we moved into our larger (900 S.F. vs 600 S.F. ) house closer to our elementary school, it definitely was “the” place that kept our memories alive and kicking to this day.
The first house was a definite step up from a small 25 foot long trailer. the craftsman style was nice and the yard was outstanding for the two young brothers to go outside and play all day. But, our mom decided that the house was too small as we were growing by leaps and bounds.

I was a 9 year old kid with a few years of playing around as little kids do. But, now, new friends and neighborhood crept into the daily life until the college days and beyond. Even after my wife and I met in college, got married a couple of years later and had our own dinky apartment. Those events created their own history. But, we both continued to visit the “old homestead” that started in 1953.

It wasn’t a Craftsman Style, but, later on we found out it was one of the earliest tract homes built in Long Beach. By 1953, from the worst time in 1952 school year to the best time for a new direction in activities, this house was the base for all future development.

It had to be the new environment, new friends, new steps to expanding our horizons that made it what it was and continued to be until we sold the house 45 years later in 1998. YRMV

So, yes, I was a different person back then. Developing the continued basic skills necessary for the future steps from junior high school, high school teenage years and into adult hood with a family of our own. It was all a “Circle Game” noted by Joni Mitchell and Tom Rush in their versions of the famous song.

Hello,
In elementary school, I learned a hard lesson. Teamwork is necessary to field a winning team. Whether it is just a cl***room kickball game against another cl*** or a compe***ive basketball game in our after school sports programs. It was not obvious to me as I was a top athlete in all sports.

But, my team was not in the top 3 of the grade level cl***room school-wide compe***ion in the team games. I knew I could do well, and I overlooked how to treat others to get their game skills up and compe***ive. I was rudely awakened as we never won the cl*** championship until the 5th -6th grade. By then, I was helping coach the teams and we started winning.

The high school athletics got me few scholarships, but the colleges were too far away from the coast and surf adventures. So, I went to the local So Cal colleges to finish out.

I realized that as far as I was concerned, being a champion is secondary to actually having fun in whatever sport or activity one is involved. I could have pushed the football inclusion in college, but realized it was going to be a limiting experience.

So, concentrating on something like surfing and road trip adventures appealed to me. I had the most fun and wanted to make traveling to surf spots a career, like other professional athletes. A new adventure at the time.

A couple of surf industry folks thought a traveling surfer showing the “wares” from the west coast groups was an interesting concept. But, I still had to pay my way. The merchandise was free to give away and wear, so, I needed a way to get to and from the coastal road trips in the USA, as well as Europe.

My mom chuckled as I asked if they would supply a scholarship for me to do the traveling and being a manufacturer’s rep for some surf industry shops. So, that was a big no…

Finally, I realized my skills were good and I was having fun getting better. So, it was concentrating on finishing college and then, I met my wife in a cl***… that was a whole new playing field… I finally got something right… YRMV
