Howdy! Is there a OE starter nose support bracket for this late model SBC mini-starter? Or just make/modify an early one? Or don’t need one? Thanks!
Curious about a support too. I put one (mini starter) in my 327 a few months back and worked great, no shim. Maybe a couple months later it started to make a shring sound and then a terrible noise. I've been doing some cleaning, polishing and painting while it's out and I'm going to put a shim in when it goes back in. I'm wondering with no support if it moved.
The front starter bracket was only used on the original style early starters on small and big block chevy's because of the starters were so heavy. Never seen or needed the bracket for the lighter mini starter.
Thanks for the responses. I was curious not for the weight, but to resist any torque trying to crack the aluminum mount to the block. If the GM engineers didn’t think it necessary, then probably not needed. Just do’t let it get loose.
Yes, I used the bolts that came with the starter motor, a Jegs unit, and retorqued after the first hint of shring which solved for a short time. When it worsened the bolts took no torque.
Here's a little info that might help: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/sbc-starter-support-bracket.662481/
Personally, I would throw that Jegs starter in the trash and get an AC Delco mini starter. You can get them pretty reasonable from Summit or Amazon.
I always run a brace. Actually made one for the mini starter on my 53. Seen too many snap bolts. One engine I had to pull broke starter bolts a couple times. The third time I sourced a brace for it. Magically it still hasn't broken the last set of bolts I put in five years ago

The wrong bolts and to much timing will break the nose on a old style starter in a minute, especially on a Big Block.
I have not used a Support on Mini's Not all are made /created equal. OEM mini work well , down fall for Chevy Oem does not have dual bolt pattern, Aftermarket Non Oem hit & miss , On Quality, cheap Contacts on the inside and parts used. Bolt Quality is a must, there is so many Off shelf big box stores , Ebay Amazon Junk , You can tell , Bolt , nuts , washer Etc. Buy color , look of threads , Just Junk even grade 8 , same with brass. I have seen Broken starter pads Outer bolt & pad , because of Cheap & Wrong starter Bolts , & battery almost dead , To much initial timing because people do not know how to start,, with a lot of initial timing you need to start like you would with a Magneto!! There are different specs on starters Just like a Alternator, In One of my Applications I had to use a 6 or 7 hp starter ,
I just bought two new bolts this week from the local Chevy store, the knurling makes the bolts tight in the housing with no movement. $30.00 for 2 bolts but they had them in stock so how do you argue with that, or at least that is how I look at things. These were like 4.33 inches long.
Thanks for all the responses. The starter is OEM, freshly rebuilt by starter shop I trust, with new bolts. Just thinking about the future. If I do anything it will be like @blue 49 ’s bracket.
