So the screws in this Chevy pickup are an elongated special machine screw. Not a slot and not a Phillips. What are they called and where do you get the tool to take them out?

I’d like to see a picture of what you’re talking about, but one odd screw that older Chevy‘s used is called a clutch head almost a bit of a figure 8 shape.

If it's hourglass shaped it's a clutch head.

They're clutch head screws. You can get screwdrivers or bits for them online.

Yep, bought a set of three after I got my '55 Chevy pick up way back when.

Yep, like others say, clutch head. The only places I've ever seen those were Chevys and some travel trailers. Really a b....h to remove when rusty.

Just worked on a 58 Apache that had clutch head screws. Our 52 Chevy car also has them. In a pinch I was able to use a file end in there to get a few out. The proper tool would have been better if there are a bunch to remove. Either way, I'd start spraying them with penetrating oil now.

If you’ve ever tuned or rebuilt a 4160 Holley carburetor the secondary metering plate is held on with clutch heads.

  12. Figure-eight shaped clutch head screws were on my '55 Chevy's gas tank sender.

I loosened them with vise grips & replaced them with normal machine screws.

Clutch head would be correct. I was given a set of clutch head screw drivers from a friend I was helping move a couple of years ago. Took a while for me to figure out what they were used for. But when I did need them, they were quite handy!

I needed 3 different size clutch head bits when I built my wife's Panel Deliv.
Needless to say, when I was finished, there were none of those stupid screws left in it.

I think they were pretty common across all GM lines. I know my Pontiac has some of them in the interior.

I made a few clutch head drivers out of old shitty screwdrivers, cut the head off and carve the shape in with a cutoff wheel. My homemade ones are extra sharp on the sides that engage when you turn out the screw. Having the engaging edges really sharp helps bite into the screws when they're rusty. The store-bought units I have are a bit more rounded.

A small impact type cordless drill screwdriver worked well on my truck, plenty of penetrating oil and pressure on the bit, hit in very short bursts.

  21. The Filling Station sells a set of 4 that fit all the different sizes on the Chevys/GMC's. I looked everywhere for the different sizes needed, even the tool trucks couldn't supply them.
