  4. Banger Magneto Question….

I’ve been looking at different magnetos for the B engine in my vintage, pile-o-parts sprint car.

Here’s the latest one I’ve looked at:
WICO AP, base mount 4 cyl.
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/2568331321...bx14briS1u&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Does it rotate CW looking at the drive end? Yes CW
Does it have an impulse drive? Apparently.
Will it work on my Alexander OHV with side drive if the drive lines up?
    Thanks!

  5. Nothing too major to report! With a circus of 4 toddlers between me and my girlfriend, I decided its time to get a heavy hauler!

Does anyone know if a Belond header will fit with the engine pans without trimming?

So far I've got a B distributor for it, downdraft intake and carb, 6:1 head, and a belond header.

Try to find out from somebody that has run a mag and find out what's involved to make work right. My discussions with guys that used these for racing told me they had to run a like a choke cable to be able to advance and retard the spark. Most were used on stationary equipment and didn't need an advance curve. From what I've heard after starting and engine is hot, they can be hard to restart if you don't have a way to adjust. Hopefully somebody with more experience chimes in and has some information to share.

  7. I've been thinking about linkage for my side drive, but the choke cable idea is genius! I forgot where exactly he wrote it, but Jim Brierly made a comment regarding side drives recommending the use of an impulse. I'm sure with using the stock GAV mount and a clever bell crank design, you could adjust one

I've used this American Bosch mag on one of my side drives. I prefer it because it has a lever that adjusts the timing manually.

  9. Thanks for the first hand advice @Crazydaddyo ! Definitely one to consider,

EDIT: Considered it for about a minute, and bought it.
Cheap enough to experiment with. Plus I found another one equally as cheap. Dredged up some pages on the net from an original manual..
Good info on that model and its setup.
    Thanks again! Looks promising.

Hot rod sedans are plenty of fun, I've just got mine running with a hopped up burtz, mines right hand drive so I can't answer your question about the header, but I can tell you I haven't had any overheating problems with the previous hopped up banger and the current burtz since I went to a pressurised radiator, some 16 wires with 7.00 rears and 5.50 front tyres its sits ok on stock suspension but I do have a 34 axle for it and plan to pull a couple of leaves to get it sitting better
Here a quick video of it running, the burtz is pretty healthy, it's got a lionspeed 7.5:1 head, burtz 340 cam, burns intake, larger holley 94 from a y block and a home made 4 into 1 header that works pretty well, it will pull 55mph in second with a stock transmission, 3.78 gears, I've had it to 80mph so far but chickened out due to stock brakes, but boy is it fun, I've had fun this last month of summer

You might want to look at posts made by the late RichFox. There might be something there.

    Yes.
There is also a lag mechanism on the drive side (impulse drive) that automatically retards the timing at engine starting speed. Once the engine is at idle speed, the lag locks out and reverts to static timing. If I remember correctly, the timing lever on the back changes the timing @ 10 or 12 degrees.
