    I have the same one.

It is great for bulk build-up.

  2. We have one at work, my buddy Johnny is the only one who uses it. John also got to work with Gene Winfield a few years ago at a World of Wheels show in Chicago. Gene was helping chop a top on a 51 Mercury. IMG_0431.jpeg

Went to Marty Strode's shop this morning and he bent up my tubing for the Lakewood 3 point rollbar clone I want to put in my '39 Chev coupe.

More welding and painting once I cut and weld the other leg and cross brace.

  5. Bulk build up is the correct term.
We started tiging it several years ago and got 1/2 of 1 side done. Got distracted on other things.
The mig process isn’t as pretty but that’s ok for this project. It’s getting ground all around

I found a new in the box Hobart spool gun for cheap on the market place that is compatible with my Hobart welder.
Haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

The college had a new wire welder that would aluminum. I took the opportunity to repair a cracked plate of t6061 with it. One of the aviation techs said it would always be cracked or weak and wouldn’t pass. Aviation grade inspection. I gave him both plates (one for each side of the boat stern) and told him to tell me which plate was repaired and where. He even had their instructor use the testing the do on propellers and the couldn’t find the repair. Part of the key is knowing what you are welding and using the correct wire. Those plates are for my go fast boat.

  8. . My former place of employment is now an aluminum repair facility. TIGs aren’t allowed to be used in new cars due to frying computers.
All they use are spool guns when welding. (Most is rivet bonding
When I was there we used a regular mig, no spool. Horrible set up. Plus I don’t think our small machines were powerful enough at the time.
The test welds these guys do each year are impressive for wire
This was my test weld today

didn’t have a stainless brush. Cleaned off with a scuff pad.
So should improve with proper cleaning. But not bad for doing this the first time with a spool.

  10. Just watched a couple videos. Learned a lot on how to clean it up. Some is cleaning the part. The other could be the shielding gas. I’m using 100% like I should but that doesn’t mean the gas is being delivered correctly by the spool gun.
I’ll bring a stainless brush tomorrow and try again.
    Play with gas flow
Wonder if this cast piece needs pre heated any?

The stove bolt Chebbies are pretty thin structured for frames . Nothing more than sheet metal framed into a top hat .

I ordered this bullseye pick and few days back, it was at the house when I came home so I barely ate dinner and took the box straight into the shop to test it out.

    BULLSEYE PICK 15 INCH.jpg

After 90 mins or so I worked out a bunch of dings and dents at the top of this quarter. I didn't get a good before pic.

There's a little more fine tuning. I just need some practice before I can do that... hahaha. I'm not "fine tuning capable" just yet.

In my opinion, this is one of those tools that pays for itself straight away. It made the task much easier.

My Systimatics MP175 will supposedly mig 3/8 aluminum using 3/64 aluminum wire. I won’t buy the aluminum wire or spool guides for it until I feel I need to weld with it.

edit. Just saw the stainless wire brush comment. Make sure the brush you use on aluminum has never been used on anything other than aluminum. There will always be residual material left if used on something else and it will mess with the weld.

I hear that the wire needs to be touching the base to start. Purging the gas flow is always done before a weld that needs it.

When you think it’s clean enough clean some more, an excellent instructor told me that. My welds with a spool gun improved a great deal after I started super cleaning. Like @snoc653 says don’t let your new SS brush touch anything else, change to new brush after awhile also.

Waiting on a box of parts, and can’t go much further with anything until it gets here:

So I dragged the transmission out to start cleaning it up, also need to put a rear seal in it. Not doing anything else to the trans and praying to the car gods it will survive. I bought it off Craigslist years ago, it’s got to be good, right?

Hang in there. Hopefully you'll be in PT in no time.

  19. As I posted before, I am making my bare bones race interior more showy and comfy if you will. Here are a few pictures. The floor is all but done. Roll and pleat marine grade vinyl. Kill Matt was first, then I made templates for the upholstery board, then wrapped. the panels on the floor are all removable for cleaning or whatever. Next up is finish making my seat brackets well, pretty, and fab up new gas pedal linkage, also making some custom padding for the cage that will be red metal flake type vinyl material and thin foam. I even put some nice black insulation, foam on the inside of the fire wall. Not to bad for a dumb ass that has never done upholstery before. More to come.... @mad mikey , looks nice. nothing wrong with some creature comforts inside. Hell, even a coffin has a nice interior
Years ago a local racer with more money than brains, had a wicked 69 Camaro drag car, mostly glass, weighed nothing. he wanted a full 69 deluxe interior, no seats but rugs, door panels, dash pad, etc. It really did make the car a lot nicer to look at.

    Nice work!

  22. Thanks Billy, It is taking longer then I thought, but moving toward the finish line now, just in time for spring.

Looking pretty good. That should reduce the noise level inside of the car a bunch.
You are a brave man installing a white floor in the hot rod though.

  26. Didn't you feel guilty adding all that weight. Lol

Anthony, are you going to use rochester or Stromberg carbs on that intake?

  29. I still want to know why you can't idle on all 3 carbs ? All my 2x4 combos idle on both carbs and you'd be able to keep fresh fuel in all 3 carbs.
