I am starting a welding cl*** tomorrow through the continuing education program at my local school district. One of the requirements is that I bring safety gl***es.

I wear prescription eyegl***es, and I can't see without them. Regular safety gl***es aren't going to work for me. The only thing I have been able to find are the cheap goggles that slip over my gl***es and are held in place with an elastic strap (makes my gl***es fog up) or the giant plastic things like they gave out in chemistry cl*** in high school (won't stay on my face when work over mygl***es).

Year ago I worked at a place that supplied me with clip on side shields, similar to what you find on safety gl***es, for my prescription gl***es. They are like these:

Does anyone know of a place where I can buy them locally? I checked a welding supply place, Home Depot, Lowes, and the auto parts stores. Nobody even knows what I am talking about. Any other ideas?

My company supplies our safety gl***es and of course they come from the one place you have not checked. Wally World.
They supply side shields as we are required to wear them at all times on company property.
These are prescription gl***es that I am talking about.

I'm not sure if you referring to gl***es or goggles in your description of the chemistry cl*** thing, but when I don't have my prescription safety gl***es I just put some of those big lens clear jobbies over mine and they fit just fine. You probably already tried those.

    My optometrist doesn't sell gl***es. I bought them at Wal-Mart. :)

I just called them, and they don't sell the side shields. They will sell me prescription safety gl***es. I'll get some of those when I can afford them, but the shields would be helpful until then.

    Any other ideas?

EDIT: Deyomatic-I have tried those, but they always fall off when I start sweating. I think it is because I have a big head and a small nose. :) I would like to have something I can wear under my welding hood. I haven't tried it, but I suspect it would be awkward wearing two pairs of gl***es and a hood.

You might check with Lenscrafters. Many frames can be had with removable side shields, so......

Grainger has the ones that are like clear rubber that slip over you eye gl*** arms and they are great i have been using them for years .

As an alternative, if you need the gl***es as bifocals, you can get a magnifying lens insert for your welding helmet. Kind of like those cheap reading gl***es that are 1.5, 1.75, etc that you see for around $10 at the drug stores. Your welding shop should carry them. That may allow you to use regular safety gl***es until you can get some prescription safety gl***es.

I agree that any good gl***es place should have the side shields that slide over the arms.

Again, not what you wanted, but if you wear the gl***es style safety gl***es (that you wear 'over' your prescription gl***es) you can use a strap on the safety gl***es that will hold them on. That's what I do, works like a charm.

Since you only are looking for side shields, I ***ume that the gl***es you want to wear are throw aways. You WILL get pits, scratches and embeded pieces of slag in your lenses. Sooner or later you will do that "quick" grinding or cutting job and be in too much of a hurry to project your lenses. Particularly if they are plastic. After getting new lenses every 6 months for the first 3 years with the power company, and I'm talking GL*** (Every other set on MY nickel) I finally got our safety dept. to provide some made by UVEX that slip over your gl***es. They have side shields and have adjustable bows and interchangable colored and clear lenses. Now I throw these away every 2-3 months and can wear lightweight plastic lenses in my gl***es. Like you I need mine to see. I have my progressive bi-focals ground for 9" on the bottom instead of 16" for close up work. The UVEX's in their various forms have been working for me for over 25 years now. Most any safety supply and a lot of sporting goods stores carry these.

The gl***es I want to use them with are an old spare pair, but I hadn't considered the long term effects of grinding and stuff. A pair of the shields from Grainger or whatever might work well in the short run, but cost me a lot long term in replacements for the gl***es they are attached to. I think I need to try out some of the options everyone has suggested and decide what the best route would be.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I didn't realize I had so many options.
