Many good memories of Mountain Park, always had fun as a kid with cousins and friends, too bad it's now only a memory along with the ski slope, that was only a short trip for the locals to ski.
Yes, PCH in Santa Monica, heading North to the Palisades. Hello, In the early 60s, we drove this coastal highway from our house in Long Beach, through the coastal cities along the Los Angeles coastline. This portion of the coast face West/Northwest and gets surf from that direction. As regulars we only came up this way in the summers to surf Malibu when the swell was from the South. The little “v” in the mountain top edge is above the Malibu surf spot. That part faces South. During the winter, we drove this way to get to our favorite surf spot up North in the Santa Barbara area, Rincon. We could not go up and back on the freeway as the steep hill climbs prevented us with the underpowered Flathead. But, this coastal drive always kept our spirits high and the anticipation of seeing Rincon blasting its cove waves was always on our minds. The above photo is unusual as it shows the water right against the homes along the shore. “In total, between 1945 and the late 1960s, nearly 30 million cubic yards of sand were deposited on the beaches of Santa Monica Bay. And studies in the 1960s showed that, while similar efforts failed elsewhere in the U.S. due to extreme weather and erosion, they worked in Southern California thanks to an array of unique factors.” Today, they are still trying to restore the beaches from completely being washed away. But, as one can see, this portion of the PCH highway faces West, up to the current fire raged through the area. From the far reaches of the homes along the Santa Monica Beach as one drives North. The road curves and from that point on, it was blocked due to the fire jumping the PCH highway and burning the row of homes along the coastline around Malibu. Jnaki Our next road trip along this portion of the coast will have to take a breather, as we may have to go inland on the freeway to get to Santa Barbara and points, North. The clean up and crowded streets are limiting those who can drive along the coastline. So, now, one needs a pass to get by the stops and enter the ex-fire zone to drive along the ocean shoreline… YRMV
