Good morning folks, This is a bit newer than most on this forum but I know there's a lot of knowledgeable folks here. I've recently acquired an 87 Chevy Caprice. It's been sitting since 2009 but runs amazing. I've unfortunately found out it has a fixed non tilting seat. Does anyone on here know if the seat can be modified to a different position? It doesn't seem like they'd build separate seats, just different hinges or something, I don't need to convert it to tilt but if it could be locked a few more degrees up my back would appreciate it. Don't want to tear into it without asking for advice first Thanks folks. --Chris
I don't think it can. 4-door bench I imagine. And what you meant was that you bought a seat from an '87 Caprice to go in your HAMB appropriate car and wondered if it could be modified to tilt more.
sure would help to know if it's a bench, or split bench, or buckets, or what? but if the seat seems to be broken (leaning back too far), then it needs to be taken apart and fixed. Also, it's likely the foam is in bad shape after all these years, and may need to be replaced, which can help a lot with comfort. And springs tend to break, and might need to be replaced. Or find a different style seat to install.
Apologies, no it's a 60/40 split bench. Thoughts of a different seat have crossed my mind but this one is so plush and soft it would be hard to convince myself to exchange it. I think you'll find my 51 Ford F7 a little more to your liking when I get a chance to start in on it.
With 75,000 miles that appear to be original and the p***enger side matching I don't think it's broken. The people who like to slouch while driving would find it extremely comfortable, but with back problems my body doesn't enjoy it very much. I've considered buying a pillow for my upper back hahaha
You can take the seat apart and see how it's built, and what you might do to modify it. Also, you can consider adding "shims" to the back of the seat tracks, where they bolt to the floor, to tilt the whole seat forward.
