I'm gonna replace the worn ring gear on my French flatty. I have one that is the right diameter inside and outside and the correct number of teeth. It seems It has a front and back side , I guess the side with the little diagonal surface goes to the transmission side since the starter is a pull style ? Do i have this right or ?? And if I want to use a mini starter do a place the ring gear "backwards" since a mini starter is a push type.? This will be the first time for me to replace a ring gear and the old is to worn to seen. anything about placement . I want to get this right. ring gear. Pull type ? Push type ?
I would install it depending which starter you go with. The teeth on both the ring and pinion have bevels ground in them to help the two gears mesh together upon starting the engine.
Yes. The direction will dependent on which starter you choose. Standard bendix will have the ring gear bevel facing the transmission, mini starter will have the ring gear bevel facing the engine.
You probably know this already, but put the flywheel in the freezer over night, and heat the ring gear with a torch and it should go together very easily with a few taps of a big hammer.
I indeed read something about the flywheel in the freezer and ring gear in the oven ( when the wifey is out ) don't know if that will work instead of a torch ?
Yes, and it heats more evenly. Have gloves, a flat surface and a soft hammer of some kind handy. If it doesn't want to slip on easily, tap it or heat it a little more. Gently, not forcing anything. Also, you might want to lightly deburr and dress the mating edges before heating.
I fought a FH Dodge 6 ring gear for a day it seemed, trying to get it on. Cold flywheel, warm ring gear. I wound up putting a small bevel on the inside of the gear to get it started, tapped right on.
Heating ring gear in oven will give a more uniform heated surface. You need 400 to 450 degrees which is achievable in household oven. Freezing flywheel to below zero will help greatly. Just let both soak long enough to get to proper temps, break edges with a file for easier assembly. Also have a flat firm surface to assemble on if you have to tap them together.
This was real easy , the old ring gear i could get of cold with a punch and light hammer tapping around a few rounds. The flywheel in the fridge and ring gear in the oven on 200 celcius for 30 minutes. The ring just slid on , no tapping needed.
